    • This decision can be better made through a total understanding of fundamentals of society.

Fundamentals of society up to now despite the advancement of civilizations remain to be :

      social and culture integrity,
      justice and equity,
goodness over evil, (belief in accountability to our ultimate creator)
      mutual respect and harmony,
      community bonding,
empathy for the weak, deprived and oppressed,
      law and order,
      values, creativity, entrepreneurship etc.

In short, in such a society, it is such fundamentals like positive values which will bring about peace, progress and prosperity and social cohesion essential to creating a greater and more vibrant for survival in an increasingly uncertain world.

For such similar reasons though different motives, leaders have been talking about promoting values like family togetherness, social cohesions and even for want of something better, confucianism.

Will we do better if we see our government giving up such fundamentals and begin to promote gambling, compromise on open prostitutions and lately encouraging more and more outlandish traits among people with inborn yearning due to imperfection of creations to make such traits the norm of society.

At the moment, gay people are not deprived or really prohibited from taking up jobs or being accepted for particular professions and vocations. This is enough and there is no need to want to be more pragmatic like making more monies from gambling and other negatives. What could be the more noble and pragmatic reason to want to openly declare homosexuality as a normal part of open culture and social order. Why the sudden urge to want to promote gays be more openly accepted as acceptable norms of society.

Let the goodness triumph over evil, social cohesions over frictions and not let the deviants rise over the other positive values held as fundamentals of society for the sake of peace, progress and orderly growth of society in which all could bring up their families without being subjected to undue evil influences of all sorts associated with deviant conduct and wayward behaviour even if such wayward conduct and behaviour are not deliberate acts.

Let the mainstream society continue to growth from strength to strength with people practising fundamental values and not the deviants around them.

    • Just a clarification:-

I am concerned with gradual erosions of fundamental values in society. I am not in support of suppressing the gays or other outlandish traits among people in society but it could be quite different thing altogether to go further to go on promoting and championing them as the norm. I am in support of not suppressing their right as individuals which should be respected but just enough to let them carry on this life with some dignity.

    • This screams insincerity. It just doesn’t match the conservative staple they churn out. I get a very strong feeling they’re bending over (pun intended) just to pander to the people who bring in the money.. putting on a superficial front to mask the reality. What’s the reality? 377A, baby. Did anyone else pick up on this or is it just me?

So when anything cannot be judged, the leaders could anyhow proceed with doing what they like for whatever self-centredness or other hidden or narrow-minded agenda which only serve their own purpose.

If the leaders really must show they are loosening past controls on many things why not loosen up on the overly excessive tight control on news and information which serve no useful purpose except to stifle the growth and vibrancy of economy increasing costs of living and making majority of citizens poorer by the days.

What good has such hypocrisy and so-called pragmatism done which only covers up real problems and postpone solutions.

well, they will do anything to protect their interest. Anybody who pose any threat to them will get it from them. Whether sound, not sound, right or not right, they have the say, to them there is only one voice which is their own voice! So to say, they are the judge! WE are asked to voice out opinions about the setting up of the casino, so look what happen! Haven't we enough of all those from them to acknowledge what sort of govt they are, do we still need proof?

    • topic shouldn't be " .. be wrong to promote gay " . theres a difference between de-crimminalising gay marriages and promoting homosexuality. The former is advocating human rights, while the later is morally wrong.

while i personally don't advocate homosexuality, i feel that crimminalising homosexual marriages is an infringement of human rights. Its really up to the individual if he reallys want to be gay. Since he isnt actually causing harm/hurt to anyone ( him included ), why cant he do it without being prosecuted?

Yes, homosexuality is something our normally conservative asian society finds hard to accept, but

      1. we really have to move on with the times
      2. doesnt have to crimminalise gay marriages in order to discourage it.

Besides, simply crimminalising gay marriages wouldnt work. Quite useless in discouraging homosexuality. Gays will still continue gaying, and its real difficult to enforce the law.

In fact, studies have shown that gays are actually at a higher risk of contracting AIDs. so instead of crimminalising gay marriages and forcing homosexuals to go underground, why not allow it in order to better regulate it?

No objection to decrimalizing gay. Some laws or regulations have been amended already to allow gays to enter the mainstream of society be it in employment or taking up of offices of high positions.

So the issue facing our society is not about decriminalizing gay now.

With the past tendency of our autocratic leaders to get carried away in so many social engineerings of all sorts, citizens are wondering whether this latest highlighting of more liberalization on gays including talk of openly allowing same-sex marriages etc will be like the IR and open prostitutions further signal open promotion of more and more undesirable activities across the mainstream society.

If there is such a likelihood then citizens are naturally wondering what kind of government are we having today after what they have done with IR and open acceptance of prostitutions, what else they might be opening up.

Citizens are therefore asking what happen to our society. Are we the citizens being guided to practise fundamental values like goodness, empathy, morality, law and order, community spirit, family togetherness or even confucianism talked about for ages any more.

This larger concern facing the citizens now need to be re-looked at in the context of likely promotion of gay marriages or homosexuality. Gays are already being helped to secure their rights to employment and what more do they want anyway. Excesses in promoting activities that might undermine fundamental values treasured by the citizens will be just as bad and may lead to further evil practices and our eventual declining.
