On Boxing Day 2004, a powerful earthquake off the Indonesian coast triggered a tsunami that reached the shores of three continents leading to the deaths of more than 200,000 people. The following pictures compare the affected areas then and now, one year on. -
This is Hat Rai Lay Beach in southern Thailand. In the top photo you can see the tidal wave heading ashore. -
Two days after the tsunami hit, wreckage littered the length of Tewewong Road just off Patong beach in Phuket, Thailand. Today the street is still clogged, but this time with traffic. -
Twelve months on, almost all of the main tourist sites in Thailand have been cleared and many rebuilt. The top photo, taken on New YearÂ’s Eve 2004, shows the devastation to the resort at Takua Pa on the island of Phi Phi. -
The tsunami devastated the popular tourist resort of Patong. It, too, is now open for business again and the tourists are back. -
A Thai Navy boat that was guarding the king's grandson, Khun Poom Jenson, was washed inland by the tsunami, coming to rest approximately one mile (1.5km) inland from Khao Lak beach. Today the boat remains as a shrine; the king's grandson died in the sea. -
Today this is the Tsunami Victim Identification and Repatriation Centre in the Takua Pa district of Thailand; a year ago it was the site of a mass grave. -

Debris and bodies litter the street in front of Baiturrahman mosque in Banda Aceh, Indonesia on 27 December 2004, about 150 miles (243 km) from the earthquake's epicentre. -
Another mosque near Banda Aceh also withstood the power of the wave. Today the scarred earth has returned to life. -
The resort of Koh Raya in the Andaman Islands was severely damaged. The picture on the left shows the wave approaching before it destroyed the building on the right. Today the resort has been re-built. -
