    • Tearing out tabs from parking coupons could soon be a thing of the past.

An app to allow motorists to pay their parking charges using their mobile devices is being developed by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and the Housing & Development Board (HDB), together with the Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech).

This app - intended for use at carparks that currently use paper coupons - will allow motorists to key in their vehicle number, select the carpark and how long they intend to park.

The app automatically calculates the charges that motorists have to pay based on their parking duration on a per minute basis.

It can also be used to check the validity of a motorist's parking session and remotely extend the duration if need be. Motorists will be refunded if they choose to end their parking session earlier.

A trial will be conducted among public sector officers from May to June 2017 on the functionality of the app at 84 selected public carparks in the city area.

"During this period, we will test the app, especially the payment module, to be confident of its robustness before we extend the trial to the general public," said the URA, HDB and GovTech in a joint release on Monday (May 15).

The three agencies added that the trial is expected to be extended to members of the public later this year, with more details to be announced at a later date.
