Isn't a pass in english all that is needed for most such
courses?

Actually before really going to start a career in social
service, i would advice u to consider starting 1st as a volunteer
for a period of time and ensure that is really your interest before
you consider making it ur career.

As a volunteer myself, i've seen many people who initially had
alot of passion and interest but somehow things don't seem to turn
out as what they were expecting and they slowly loss passion and
interest to quit in the end.

Its best to have some experience, know that its really what you
want before you go invest in time and money for a proper course
since its too late to regret after you have obtained your cert.

Indeed, it's stated on the site that the minimum requirement for
entry to social degree courses on english language is a pass. Even
though it's stated plainly, I do enjoy overcoming the limits of my
own ability, and also intend to head to the States to obtain an
LCSW license to work there, if everything works out as planned.
Afterall, that's where the main branch of social work started. So,
it's really a marathon towards english competency in the short-term
and long-term.

Truth be told, the lofty aspirations in my mind need to be
brought down to the practical reality of the world. I've not
volunteer in any professional organisations, though I do enjoy
conversing with young children and elderly.

I agreed a voluntary session would help anyone seeking a
long-term career in the social service to re-adjust one's
expectations, re-align one's proper vision, and review the decision
before it's being cast in stone. So, dckx, where do you actually
volunteer? Care to share some info?

can the lousiest express class student go to JC? replied by -Wanderer- @ Sun, 08 Nov 2009 01:28:29 +0800

First thing that you should ask yourself is, what is your
ambition in life? What do you have most passion for? What is the
future job that you can envision yourself in next time? With that
said & done, you work towards that goal.

And seriously, I don't see what is up with the stupid JC vs Poly
debate. As everyone has said, there are its own pros & cons.
And don't go to a JC for the sake of recognition, easier entry to
Uni or whatever hoohah reason. Just do what you want to do.

My own personal experience is that I took the JC route, screwed
up my A levels. But managed to enter engineering in NTU. And
honestly speaking, I'm still wondering if this is my cup
of tea. I'm struggling now as I find it hard to catch up
with Uni life after a 2 years break due to NS and the
accelerated pace of Uni life. Same for my poly friends and other JC
friends. We are all trying to find our way around in this 1st
year. So ultimately when you hit Uni, everyone is on the same equal
plane. We just
find a way to survive! But in the end, you must
have a passion for what you want to do. And even if you realise
that you have made the wrong choice, you can always switch.
There is never an end to the road for you.

1. Solid NaCl and conc. H2SO4 can be used to generate HCl in situ
for the reaction with alkenes to produce choloroalkanes.

(iii) explain why 2-chloropropane is formed as the major prod.
instead of 1-cholorpropane. (2 marks)

^i say its because of markonikov's rule but sounds dumb to me...or
is it because the c=c with more H attached to it is more electron
rich due to positive inductive effect of H, hence it is better at
attracting the positive part of the addend ie H of HCl?

(iv) can a high yield of 2-iodopropane be obtained by a similar
method by replacing NaCl with NaI? explain your answer with
appropriate equations. (3 marks)

^dont know lol.

<p style=

2. Hydrazine is sometimes used as a rocket fuel based on its
reaction with oxygen. in this question you may assume
that hydrazine is used in aqueous form in a fuel cell
using dilute sulphuric acid as the electrolyte.

hydrazine = N2H4 (aq) in this case.

then my question is...since this is a fuel cell, it would be like 2
nonpermeable/seperate compartments right, 1 containing O2 gas and
the other with N2H4, but why would they still need h2so4 as
electrolyte?

reduction eqn: N2(g) + 4H+ + 4e double arrow N2H4(aq)

3. Au+ + e -> Au Ered=+1.69V

Au3+ + 3e -> Au Ered = +1.50V

using the above data explain why gold does not tarnish easily in
air.

^i tried to explain something like because it has extremely
negative Eox values, hence there are little oxidising agents strong
enough with Ered > 1.5 to 1.69 to be able to start the redox
reaction with Ecell>0, is that correct?

4. C2H6 + Br2 -> C2H5Br + HBr

(ii) explain why is this described as a free radical substituition
reaction

(iii) explain why this reaction is an example of homogeneous
catalysis.

5. this 1 involves 3 compounds M, N and Q.

M has a benzene ring with the branch CH2OH attached to it.

N has a benzene ring with the branch COOH attached to it.

Q has a benzene ring with a branch CH3, and taking that carbon
substituted to be carbon number 1, on carbon number 4, there is an
OH substituent on the benzene ring.

(i) describe and explain how the acidities of M, N and Q compare
with each other

^i think this qns max 3 marks.

6. an industrial use of HCl is to make chlorine dioxide, which is
manufactured on a massive scale for the bleaching of wood pulp and
purification of water supplies. the reaction eqn is as follows:

NaClO3 + 2HCl -> ClO2 + 1/2 Cl2 + NaCl + H2O

Discuss the changes in oxidation no. of cholrine that occurs during
this reaction.

^this qns i catch no ball. as in dunno what is happening in the
eqn...i think its disproportionation of Cl in NaClO3, but...can Cl
in HCl disproportionate also?

does not really put alot of emphasis into the results but requires

Hi Alp,

Do not worry about your poor grasp of English, for as long as
you are willing to work hard on your language proficiency, it will
definitely get better as time goes by. I also believe that there
are language proficiency modules for most full-time counselling
degrees, hence you can make good use of them if you are to take up
this degree in UniSIM or other foreign universities.

By the way, please do note that Horticulture degrees are not
available locally.

As a side note, I believe that the lowest GPA among poly
students who entered the three local universities last year is
slightly lesser than 2.55, which comes from the NTU Art, Design and
Media degree course.

<a href="http://www3.ntu.edu.sg/oad2/pdfs/COP.pdf" rel=

By 10th percentile, they mean that 90% of the undergraduates for
that particular degree course got a GPA higher than the amount
shown.

NIE's 10th percentile is below GPA 3.00 as well.

when i was in sec sch, i also thought i would maybe like to go
poly instead. because everyone tells me that jc life is tough, its
hectic, you just mug your life away etc.

somehow, after much thought, i decided going to a good jc might
have more scholarship chances lol. and i still think going into a
jc is a better route to aim for scholarships, correct me if im
wrong. moreover, people usually adapt to changing lifestyles as
they come, hectic or not, it dosent make a difference once you've
adapted to that kind of life.

and so i ended up in a jc. all i can say is...if ure the average
type of student with not much aims or whatsoever and want to go jc,
try to go into a good one. the studying attitude of the general
population in a better jc is vastly different from those in a not
as good jc, as you will be more driven(by external factors eg peer
pressure) to study for better results in a good jc..

though i have some friends who scored very well and simply go
into a jc thats near their house for convenience's sake and still
doing very well. if youre that kinda person either make sure you're
very smart, or you're very motivated to do well...

Originally posted by dkcx:

A 1st class honours if obtainable is a key to further education
opporunities, higher pay etc so i believe there are still people
who are willing to sacrifice 1 year for. I won't deny the pay issue
but some people might have a more long term goal in mind and will
prefer to go slower but have more assurance for their results.

Chemistry lab is 3hrs in yr 1, 6 hrs each in yr 2/3 so i believe
its more different as theres a larger emphasis on lab work.
Everyone always try to get senior reports to copy but for my
course, they for some stupid reason decided to make the yr 2/3 lab
examinable so its no longer just doing a lab report but the
understanding of the entire experiment becomes important for that
exam which constitutes 50% of the overall grade.

They are indeed getting smarter :)

I think that's applicable to science fac so far... tough luck
:)

Thank you for adding that in. I was from NUS, thus I did not
know of such a requirement.

Just to add on, from the fact that the 90th percentile is AAA/A,
we can conclude that it is actually a very competitive degree
course.

Cheers.

There are AAA/A people everywhere but i would say ADM students
mostly have a passion for what they are studying and would require
a certain level of ability before they are admitted.
