    • No probelm here, Why over at Kagoshima never hear any breakdown so often.

      • Tram

tramThe Kagoshima City Tram is one of the few remaining streetcar lines in Japan. In addition to being a cool alternative to a bus on a hot day, the flat rate for riding and the frequency of trams makes this an excellent way to get around Kagoshima City. Plus, it’s environmentally-friendly!

        Tram Fares
        Adults: ¥170
        Children: ¥80

        Tram Lines
        Tram map

Number 1 (Blue) Line – Taniyama, Korimoto, Kotsukyoku, Takamibaba, Tenmonkan, Kagoshima Station

Number 2 (Red) Line – Korimoto, Kagoshima Chuo Station, Takamibaba, Tenmonkan, Kagoshima Station

All trams pass by three main locations: Korimoto (郡元), Takamibaba (高見馬場), and Kagoshima Station (鹿児島駅). Both trams leave from Kagoshima Station and part ways at Takimababa. Only the #2 passes Kagoshima Chuo Station. It then continues to Korimoto. The #1 also passes Korimoto, but it finishes at Taniyama. Be careful! Kagoshima Central Station (kagoshimachuoeki / 鹿児島中央駅) and Kagoshima Station (kagoshimaeki / 鹿児島駅) are not the same!

        Tips for Riding

        • Enter through the middle door. If you’re using a Rapica card, scan it on the card reader when you board. Be sure to sit down quickly or hold onto a strap.
        • Avoid using your mobile phone while on the tram.
        • Press the stop button before your stop if you want to alight. If no one presses the button the tram will not stop.
        • When there are many people on the tram, exiting can be difficult. Avoid the hassle of pushing through people by going close to the front when you get on the tram. If that isn’t an option, please say, “Sumimasen, orimasu” (すみあせん、降ります). Tenmonkan and Kagoshima Chuo Eki Mae are both popular stops – you will often find at least half the people depart at one of these.
        • Exit from the front. Here you will pay by placing your money in the fare machine. To pay your fare, you drop your money in the fare machine located next to the driver or scan your Rapica card. You must put exact change into the fare box so remember to prepare the exact change before alighting. Please note that the change machine can only change ¥1000 notes and smaller coins.
        • Ask for a transfer ticket before you pay if you want to transfer to the other line (at Korimoto or Takamibaba). The driver can give you a transfer ticket. When exiting simply say, “Nori kae-ken kudasai” (乗換券ください). The driver will give you a ticket and you will pay the fare when you exit your next tram. The ticket is only good on that day. If you’re using a Rapica card, no transfer ticket is needed. Simply scan it when you board the other tram.

    • Kobe Luminarie: Winter’s City of Light

      December 8, 2015

      by Bjorn Koolen

       Share 1 Tweet

When winter starts setting in, illuminations are organized throughout Japan with Kobe Luminarie leading the way as one of the most famous amongst them attracting around 3 to 4 million people each year. Although not truly intended to be Christmas illuminations, their extravagant design and colours easily bring Christmas to mind.

Kobe_Illumination (2)Photo by Bjorn Koolen used under CC

In Kobe the tradition started in 1995 to commemorate the Great Hanshin earthquake earlier that year with the donation of over 200.000 hand-painted lights donated by the Italian Government, which is the origin of the event’s name being the Italian word for illuminations “luminarie”. This symbolism of hope and recovery have significantly contributed to the popularity of Kobe Luminarie amongst visitors as well as sponsors willing to help pitch in in the organization of this a major event. Another nice fact to know is that the lights are lit with biomass-generated electricity during the winter illuminations. The extravagant illuminations in Italian baroque styling are produced by the Italian designer Valerio Festi, who gained fame in rethinking Italy’s tradition of illuminations and fireworks, and Kobe native Hirokazu Imaoka, who studied Italian baroque and festive arts of illuminations and has even been awarded by Italy for his cultural contribution to the cultural exchange between Japan and Italy.

During the event, a route is set out starting near Kobe’s former foreigner district at Motomachi Station which takes visitors through the city along roads which have been closed off to any traffic so pedestrians can enjoy the illuminations in safety and without hindering the resident’s daily life. You might wonder whether this is necessary but considering the event only lasts 9 days of 4 hours each day with over 3 million visitors in total the answer quite simply is a yes. Traffic attendants guide the massive stream of visitors in smaller portions so everyone has plenty of time to enjoy the illuminations and take some pictures on the way.

Kobe_Illumination (1)Photo by Bjorn Koolen used under CC

There are several minor illuminations along the route such as the one above along the road leading towards the St. Morgan Church, but the piece-de-resistance is located near the end of the route a series of intricate archways that seem to form a long hall of light. Approaching them is a marvelous sight to witness and as you walk down the hall you can admire their beauty as they reach high above you. Exiting the hall you see a great circle of light in the distance at Higashi Yuenchi Park surrounded by countless food and game stalls to complete your evening with delicious snacks and entertainment. Kobe Luminarie truly is an event you should not miss if you happen to be in the Kansai region during early December.

Kobe_Illumination (3)Photo by Bjorn Koolen used under CC

      Access, hours and admission fee

The closest station to the start of the illumination route is Motomachi Station, which can be accessed from Kyoto or Osaka by taking the JR Special Rapid Service bound for Himeiji and transfer at Sannomiya Station to a local JR line. Another option is to just walk from Sannomiya Station to the starting point near Kobe’s former foreigner district. A one-way trip from Kyoto takes you about an hour, or about half an hour from Osaka. The end of the route is close to Sannomiya Station at Higashi Yuenchi Park.

The illumination runs from December 4th to 13th starting at 18:00 to 21:30 on Mondays to Thursdays; 18:00 to 22:00 on Friday, 17:00 to 22:00 on Saturday and 17:00-21:30 on Sunday. There is no admission fee for the route, which you can check in detail on the event’s designated website .

This post is in the following categories: Things to Do
    • Cherry Bloom 2016

There is nothing more spectacular than the spellbindingly beautiful sight of cherry blossoms in full bloom. Countless of tourists flock to Japan every spring for a visual feast of these gorgeous sakuras – they call it ‘Hanami’ – and the novelty never gets old. Indeed, natives themselves remain equally in awe of this natural phenomena despite its annual occurrence.

Till date, local Japanese still cultivate the centuries-old practice Hanami. Renowned for its metaphorical meaning of the ephemeral nature of life, cherry blossoms are deeply integrated in Japanese arts and culture. In fact, they are commonly featured in many classic poetries, movies and even food!

It is important to note that the cherry blossom period varies yearly across Japan. The dates largely depend on predicted weather forecasts. Based on the past few years’ trends, this guide will serve as a forecast to the approximate dates for Cherry Blossoms periods in 2016 across five popular Japanese cities – namely Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Tokyo and Osaka.

      #1 FUKUOKA

Cherry blossom period: 20 March 2016 to 3 April 2016

Japanese city Fukuoka’s geographical location is an interesting one; it is actually nearer to Seoul than it is to Tokyo. Fukuoka is also renowned for tonkotsu ramen so do not miss out on piping hot bowls of this delicacy while you are there.

Katsumaya Park, where Fukouka Castle is, is a great place to check out the cherry blossoms in full bloom. Alternatively, you can take a leisure stroll around Nishi Park too.

      #2 HIROSHIMA

Cherry blossom period: 25 March 2016 to 5 April 2016

The captivating pink sakuras at Hiroshima Castle and historic garden Shukkei-en make it hard to believe that Hiroshima was severely destroyed by the impact of an atomic bomb in 1945′s World War II. While the city has been restored to prosperity over the past decades, one is still encouraged to pay their respects at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

The eastern edge of Hiroshima Memorial Park also features picturesque cherry blossom trees.

      #3 KYOTO

Cherry blossom period: 27 March 2016 to 15 April 2016

Kyoto, the former capital of Japan, is a cultural city renowned for their age-old cultural practices and traditional monuments. Early birds should visit Kiyomizudera Temple and Maruyama Park to catch the sakuras while immersing themselves in Kyoto’s cultural splendour.

If you are visiting Kyoto only during the second week of April, we recommend you to make your way down to Heian Shrine and Nijojo Castle to admire the Yaebeni weeping cherry trees.

      #4 TOKYO

Cherry blossom period: 26 March 2016 to 7 April 2016

Visitors can catch up on their retail therapy, gourmet food and also treat themselves to the magnificent views of cherry blossoms at Tokyo, one of our favourite cities in the world!

If you are dropping by Tokyo in March, head over to National Park Shinjuku Gyoen, Shinto Shrine Yushima Tenjin and Ueno Park with your cameras! For those who are visiting in April, you can embark on an hour-long journey away from the multifaceted metropolis to the base of Mount Takao for a tranquil scenic view of the blooming cherry trees.

    • Based on this perdiction the above Cherry Blossom blooming time.

      • photo01

The gateway to Japan and Asia, Kyushu is a haven for hot springs, great food and dynamic nature.

Located on the southwest end of the Japanese archipelago, Kyushu consists of the mainland and a chain of small, sub-tropical islands. It is made up of seven prefectures: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Oita, Kumamoto, Miyazaki and Kagoshima.

Blessed with rich nature resources and a warm climate, Kyushu is Japan's third largest island. Gigantic caldera volcanoes line up one after another, and appropriately Kyushu is called "Land of Fire." As well as its many onsen, Kyushu has characteristic coastlines and various isolated islands.

Kyushu boasts an abundance of fresh food, with characteristic local dishes rooted in each area unique and wide-ranging. Kyushu is a relatively inexpensive place and that contributes to its attractiveness among tourists. The Kyushu Shinkansen line allows one to travel around Kyushu very conveniently.

        • So if you ask any Singaporean, most will tell you only Mt Fuji.

Volcanic Ash Envelops Japan's Kagoshima City

Volcanic eruptions drape Kagoshima in ash
News On Japan via majirox news -- Sep 15

Repeated eruptions from the Sakurajima volcano have produced large amounts of ash draping the city center Sept. 15, the Kagoshima Local Meteorological Agency said. Eruptions from the volcano overlooking the city of Kagoshima began on Wednesday morning, dumping 217 grams of ash per square meter (7 ounces per 10 square feet), the third-highest level of ash to fall since records began in 1994. Volcanic ash covered much of Kagoshima's Tenmmonkan entertainment and business district on Thursday morning, visibly forming clouds as cars drove through it and many pedestrians covering their faces with towels or surgical masks to avoid breathing it in.

      • Shirasu, contained in the volcanic ash of Mt. Sakurajima in Kagoshima, Japan has been used by the local people to wash cutlery for a long time. That secret wisdom is now concentrated in “Shirasu - Volcanic Ash - Soap”. Erupted hundreds of years ago, absorbing various minerals in the sea, later becoming the white stratums of the earth, Shirasu has been nourished in the nature over the years. Utilizing the hidden merits of Shirasu to the maximum, we would like to help you pursue beauty and health furthermore.

With the dense and almost elastic bubbles featured with the soap, the froth made from the spheres of the ultrafine particle Shirasu removes the dirt on the skin to the deep inside the pore where ordinary cleansing cream cannot reach. It also features Lipidure which is often used for artificial blood vessel contact lenses and others. When used in a soap, it creates artificial cells on the surface of the skin, and even after rinsing, moisture remains in the cells.
        1. Make a froth with the bubbling net. Take “Sugoka Soap, made from Volcanic Ash” at the size of about a cherry or a piece of pearl, to the bubbling net, adding a small amount of warm water, making a froth.  2. Soft bubbles gently cleanse the skin Put the froth on your palm and wash your face gently.
        * No need to rub your face hard. Massage your face with the dense bubble, skimming over the skin.
While moisture protected on the skin, it removes the surplus oil and dirt deep inside the pores. Rinse the face thoroughly, removing the bubbles. The shining refreshed skin appears.

    • Christmas in Japan
      NIPPON.COM -- DEC 19
In many countries, Christmas is a time to spend with the family, but in Japan the holiday is associated with organized events. It is an especially important date night for singles, although friends may also meet up.

Christmas Eve is considered to be particularly romantic, and couples exchange gifts on a day many regard as just as important as their anniversaries and birthdays. As retailers make their Christmas push, restaurants prepare seasonal menus and top hotels plan expensive dinner shows featuring performances by famous artists. Needless to say, hotels and traditional ryokan inns are packed on Christmas Eve.

While turkey and ham are common Christmas dishes in the English-speaking world, Japanese families usually celebrate with chicken. Due to heavy demand, orders, including from fast food restaurants and supermarkets, are typically made several days in advance. Another essential food item is the Christmas cake, typically a light sponge cake covered with cream icing and eaten on Christmas Day. It is often topped with strawberries, chocolate, and sugar or marzipan decorations shaped like Santa Claus or Christmas trees. The rush to buy cakes means Christmas is a boom season for the sweets industry ranking alongside Valentine's Day and White Day.
