60 people take part in Nokia adventure race using their mobile phones
SINGAPORE : It's a foot race around Singapore with a modern, hi-tech twist - instead of paper maps, contestants are armed with just a mobile phone.
More than 33,000 people signed up for the Nokia Wireless Adventure race - but only 60 got the chance to prove they got what it takes to win.
After flagoff, the 30 teams were off and running.
Fast feet are of course needed in this foot race, but fast fingers on that tiny mobile phone as well, as contestants punched in their puzzle answers and searched for clues.
After a quick trivia round, the Prime Time Morning team of Suzanne Jung and Steven Chia were off.
Their first task - serving up a traditional "teh-tarik".
After proving with pictures they were at locations where they were supposed to be, it was a quick dash from Orchard Road to Ang Mo Kio.
"We started out slow but we're steady, and we're still confident. We are learning new things as we go along, I had no idea the last three digits of the postal code is actually the HDB block number, we found that out and this is great," said Suzanne Jung, presenter of Prime Time Morning, MediaCorp News.
And the clues there had them gathering 1kg old newspapers.
But all that running around meant they got hungry, and the team ate what they could, whenever and wherever.
"To enjoy this as much as possible, I've ravaged some otah along the way because these are essential nutrients for a long and tiring journey," said Steven Chia, presenter of Prime Time Morning, MediaCorp News.
At the end of the day, it was Jayce Cheng and Nita Thivuchelvam who completed all required tasks in the shortest time.
"The most difficult was navigating the best way to get from one place to another, because it's a combination of train, bus and running, so you have to plan properly otherwise you tire yourself out taking the wrong train or bus," said Jayce.
"The thing is we started running right from the start, that really gave us a head start. Although we got lost at first, we managed to catch up," said Nita.
And if this race proved one thing, it's how useful and indispensable our humble mobile phone is, in this modern world. - CNA /ls
