    • I always buy 2 sticks of maltose candy from that old lady at Holland Village. I pay her anything from $2 to $10 and run away before she can give me change. She is old, frugal and very independent. I want to encourage that without making her feel like she is asking for charity. Plus her candy is pretty good! Smile

BTW, a while ago, she was covered in an article in ST.

Anyone else buys from her? Spoken to her? I never had the guts to try to chat with her.

    • A dollar.

She's always squatting by some wall with a pot of maltose candy.

Saw her few months back and gave her 5 bucks for a stick of candy too.

personally, i feel sad, for such an old lady to be still working and slogging for her life.. where are her kids/NOK? what is the govt doing to help these pp?

i have seen alot of such old folks, and seriously, i hope the govt really do something to help these pp, and not just talk

    • Her Mai Ya Tang is very nice, she makes it from scratch. You can tell because sometimes it's light, sometimes its dark, and sometimes, you get some undissolved sugar and the occasional burnt flakes. Smile And I have never gotten sick before from her candy. Those commercial ones can't beat hers!

Anyway, I buy mainly to help her out. I can't really eat 2 sticks, so I usually chuck one at the next bin I can find that is not within her sight (don't want to hurt her feelings).

Read in that ST article that she does have a family but does not want to talk about them. So I guess there are some family issues... And she refused handouts because she can support herself. Kinda admirable, cool and yet sad at the same time.

So you guys, next time, go buy a stick or 2 from the por por! CNY coming, you may just catch her in a new top that I see her each year during this season. Very Happy
