    • Intense lightning, rainfall and warm weather expected for first two weeks of May

Keep that brolly handy when you head out, as the wet weather is expected to continue in the first two weeks of May.

In a weather update on Wednesday (May 2), the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) said that “short-duration moderate to heavy thundery showers are expected mostly in the afternoon on six to eight days”, with most of the thundery showers falling in the first week of May.

“On a few of these days, the thundery showers could start in the late morning and extend into the afternoon,” the MSS added.

The weather agency noted that lightning activity tends to be more intense during this period, and that the month of May “has the second highest number of lightning occurrences after November”.

While the wet weather is expected to persist, prepare for warmer days ahead as May is “climatologically one of the warmest months of the year”, according to the MSS.

It added that for the first two weeks of May, the daily temperature is expected to range between 25°C and 33°C. The daily maximum temperature during this period could reach a high of around 35°C on a few afternoons.

In a review of the weather for April, the MSS said that the second half of the month was wetter than the first half, and that the “thundery showers were also more intense”. The highest daily maximum temperature of 35°C was recorded at Pulau Ubin and Changi on April 25.

    • Expect a wetter second half of May: Met Service

SINGAPORE: Expect an even wetter second half of May, with the Meteorological Service of Singapore forecasting more rain and warm weather.

Moderate to heavy short-duration thunderstorms are forecast between the late morning and afternoon on six to eight days in the next fortnight, said the Met Service on Wednesday (May 16).

"In addition, in the last week of the month, the eastward passage of Sumatra squalls could bring widespread thundery showers accompanied by occasional gusty winds to Singapore between the predawn hours and early morning on two or three days," said the Met Service.

In the first fortnight of the month, about half of Singapore received above-normal rainfall, added the Met Service.

May is also one of the warmest months of the year.

The daily temperature for the fortnight is forecast to range between 25 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius, said the Met Service, adding that the daily maximum temperature could hit a high of around 35 degrees Celsius on a few afternoons.
