spending on your education to earn more money?how many gold
bars!?

even after spending that kinda time and $$$ on education....do u
think u would even get a job in spore with your distance learning
degree??in the past it would be ok but there are a million
foreigners in singapore...all with degrees from university of
bangladesh to swatow mandarin orange university.yes...about a
million or more and more coming in next year due to better economic
prospects in spore!how much do u think your pay would be with a
degree to mr loo from yangtze university who is willing to werk for
$1500/month or free even for 3 months for company.big mnc would pay
at least $2k/mth for 5 years experience if they keep hiring those
from china,india,bangla,phiillippine etc etc university.

what about your 1 million fellow sporeans all from NUS,NTU etc
with degrees too.what about those sporeans who went to europe, usa
and canada for their degree?and what bout those older degree
holders that are switching jobs?

and what about those other peoplle from malaysia...they also
have good degrees from england and very good universities
worldwide.then what about those wealthy chinese people from brunei
and indonesia who studied RMIT and USA???

you have competitors WITH DEGREES from:

CHEAPER COUNTRIES-------CHINA
,INDIA,BURMA,PHIILLIPPINES,BANGLADESH(MOST SPEAK GOOD ENGLISH WITH
SOME ACCENT...SOME WITH AMERICAN ACCENT...BUT THEY ARE STILL

DEVELOPED COUNTRIES-------USA AND OTHER DEVELOPED
COUNTRIES(1000?)

WHAT CHANCE DO U HAVE?CAN IT SEE TO IT YER EDUCATION WOULD BE
WORTHWHILE AFTER ALL THE CASH SPENT ON IT?HOW IS YER RESUME GOIING
TO BE RETRIEVED AT EACH MNC HUMAN RESOURCE OFFICE WHEN ITS FLOODED
BY MILLIONS OF RESUME BY FOREIGN N DOMESTIC JOB APPLICANTS.YOU CAN
ACTUALLY SWIM AMONGST THE RESUME IF THEEY ARE ALL FLUFFED UP AND
THROWN INTO AN EMPTY SWIMMING POOL.

HOW MANY GOLD BARS ARE U GOIN TO BUY AFTER ALL THAT EDUCATION
AND KNOWING FULL WELL THERE WONT BE MUCH OF A COMPANY
INCREMENT EVEN IF THE BOSS TOOK OFF HIS PANTS AND SHOWED U HE

company human resource officer n managers keep accpting
foreigners like as if the foreigners pay them plenty money for that
job in company.

so u see...tis not simple just blaming government,,,the private
compoanies themselves play a 50% or 60% role in destroying your
future or whatever is left of it in singapore.

@ ☃®: i am not disputing the origin of
prata. in fact, i could care less where it came from, just like
where chilli crab originated. that discussion is a minefield.

what i am saying is in india, there is such a thing called
prata, or paratha. if i have seen it in the local menu, have had it
in india; so what is that less-than-angelic7030 talking about?
small matter this is, but there are far too many people here who
wrote here like they are the subject matter expert. i am not saying
i am an expert in prata but since i had it there, her statement
cannot be right.

and in malaysia, it is not even called prata. it is called roti
chanai.

@stevenson101: `roti' is a malay word that means bread, as you
know it. it is a general classification word for all kinds of
bread. paratha on its own may not mean much in this part of the
world so `roti' is added to imply that prata is a kind of
bread.

70 year old breast cancer patient jumped to her death due to
financial reasons

A 70 year-old breast cancer patient has chosen to end her life by
leaping to her death from a HDB flat.

Madam Chen Baozhu used to sell prawn noodles with her husband Mr
Yan Qingji in Geylang. They live together with a son who suffers
from cerebral palsy.

Due to their ill-health, they have to stop working and depend on
public assistance from the government to support themselves. Mr Yan
had a stroke three months ago and is still recuperating.

According to her nephew, Madam Chen was worried her medical bills
may impose a financial burden on the family.

Mr Yan has been sent to a old folks’ home and his son to a nursing
home. There is nobody else in the family to take care of
them.

As recipients of public assistance, both Mr Yan and Madam Chen
would have received a monthly allowance of $330 from the state and
they do not have to pay for their medical bills at government
clinics and hospitals.

Singapore’s aging population is a perennial headache for the
government which is exacerbated by the declining birth rates.

The government has encouraged Singaporeans to work as long as they
can. Retirement age is extended to 62 and eventually to 67.

Immigration is also encouraged as a means to increasing the
flagging population. 36 per cent of Singapore’s population now
consists of foreigners.

There are few social welfare benefits for Singapore citizens. CPF,
which is originally intended as a pension fund is now deemed
inadequate to meet the retirement needs of Singaporeans.

Singapore’s cash-rich government has so far refrained from
expanding the social safety net out of fear that it will lead to a
crutch mentality among the populace.

“Welfare” is a taboo in Singapore officialdom which has
consistently exhorted Singaporeans to be self-reliant.

Singapore’s income gap has widened considerably in the last decade.
It is the second highest among the thirty most developed economies
after Hong Kong whose result was skewed by the extraordinarily
large numbers of billionaires.

MM Lee Kuan Yew brushed aside the widening income gap as an issue
of concern during a recent forum saying that it “does not matter”
for long as the government continues to create jobs for
Singaporeans.

From our Correspondent

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said during a speech at Assisi
Hospice last night that terminally ill patients should not treat
death as a taboo subject.

He was speaking as the guest of honour at Assisi Hospice’s 40th
anniversary charity dinner. His wife, Ms Ho Ching, is the patron of
the hospice.

PM Lee urged them to discuss with their families and
doctors plans for dying with dignity and under the best possible
care.

He also said he felt more public education was needed about what
hospice and home palliative care can do to provide comfort for
patients in their last days.

With medical advances, people are living longer, but with
terminal illnesses, lives can be prolonged only up to a point when
‘more aggressive treatment will likely do more harm than good’, he
said.

Palliative care is a field of medicine that helps
terminally ill patients live the remaining days of their lives with
minimal pain and suffering. There are few specialist
palliative-care physicians in Singapore.

Singapore’s aging population will put more strain on its public
healthcare system which was rated one of the best in the world
by the World Health Organization.

Unlike Australia, Canada or the United Kingdom, palliative care
is not a recognized specialty in Singapore. The current palliative
care physicians are mostly geriatricians or internists whose
postgraduate training is in internal medicine.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) is recruiting and training more
doctors, nurses and social workers who can provide palliative care
which will also be introduced to nursing homes.

Earlier this year, Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan caused a furore
when he suggested that Singaporeans send their aged parents to live
in nursing homes in Johor Baru where medical expenses are lower. It
is not sure if there are any hospices in Johor Baru which can
accept Singapore patients in the future.

Comments

From our Correspondent

A Singapore recruitment agency posted on its website a list for
jobs for foreigners, but locals need not apply!

Allied Manpower is a licensed recruitment agency in
Singapore which claims to provide services in human resources and
manpower management. It has over 29 years of proven
experience in foreign recruitment.

It offered a list of jobs for foreigners which can be easily
filled by locals:

As we can see from above, the jobs are offered only to specific
nationalities such as Filipinos and Chinese nationals.

Of late, senior cabinet ministers have stepped forward to defend
the government’s pro-foreigner policy.

MM Lee repeated the circular argument that foreigners are needed
to take up jobs shunned by Singaporeans without which Singapore’s
economy will stagnate:

“Look at the Integrated Resorts. (On the) rooftop, not one
(construction) worker there is a Singaporean. (They are) China
Chinese and the Indians. If you don’t have that, where’s the IR,
and the 10,000 jobs (they will create)?” he asked in speech
made at a grassroots event last week.

Opticians, art teachers, beauticians and website designers are
hardly considered as jobs shunned by Singaporeans. In fact, many
locals will be keen to take up such jobs.

The Singapore Polytechnic offers a three-year course in
Optometry which is popular among students. Are Filipino opticians
more highly qualified than ours?

Saved for the positions of IT support analyst and opticians, the
other jobs offer pay of less than $1,500.

For a local website designer, $1,200 is surely too low a salary,
but it is more than enough for a Chinese National who has no family
here. Convert it to RMB and he will take home more than RMB$5,500 a
month, far more than what he makes in China.

Again, there are many qualified Singaporeans who will be
interested in applying to become an Art teacher if not for the
meager pay of $1,200.

Imagine if you are a diploma or degree holder, will you consider
taking up such a job?

Instead of addressing the real concerns on the ground, the
government has chosen to put the blame on Singaporeans for being
too “choosy” about their jobs.

The relentless influx of foreigners, especially the semi-skilled
workers, has led to increased competition for the limited jobs in
the labor market.

Singaporeans often have to accept lower pay and longer working
hours out of fear of being replaced by foreigners who generally
have fewer demands.

Despite the widespread unhappiness and resentment among the
citizenry at its immigration policy, the ruling party is adamant
that foreigners are needed to keep the Singapore economy
growing.

There is no minimal wage in Singapore. Neither are there any
social welfare benefits for those who are retrenched or
unemployed.

Singapore’s population just cross the 5-million mark this year
out of which 36 per cent are foreigners. This means that for every
person you meet in the streets, he/she is likely to be a
foreigner.

The ruling party is able to force its unpopular policies down
the throats of a subservient citizenry largely because there is no
opposition in parliament to check on them and it controls all
important state institutions.

In Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea and other Asian democracies,
citizens are able to gather and protest in the streets to show
their frustration and anger against their governments.

In Singapore, even a peaceful solo protest anywhere on the
island except Hong Lim Park is illegal under the law.

The lack of public expression of dissent helps the ruling party
to recycle and perpetuate the myth through the state media that it
is a “popular” government which have the “support” of the people to
introduce these laws and policies.

Unless Singaporeans wake up from their long slumber and reclaim
their civil and political rights as citizens of their country, they
will forever be subjected to the mercy of the ruling party.
