LKY is NOT calling the lower class losers, but just stating that in a capitalist society, there MUST be people made worse off ('losers') if there are people benefiting from the system ('winners').

in a true capitalist society such as the US, where everyone fights for themselves and takes home their own earnings, leaving those who did not fare as well as themselves to fend for themselves, which they cannot. thus in singapore, the government does step in to take care of this group of people and make sure they do not feel left out of society, as society will disintegrate and become unstable if this (large) group of people were to fall out of pace with the rest of the community.

i do agree that lky is arrogant and he could have brought his point across in a more pleasant way. his attitude most probably comes from his thinking that singapore is his, as he led it through the difficult times and brought much progress.

however, i also do agree that what he said is true and is for the betterment of society on the whole, although it may sound harsh to individuals, especially those being referred to as the 'underclass'. it is a fact of life that they are the ones at the tail end of singapore's great economic growth, not enjoying its benefits as much as the upper class.

but you must also bear in mind that income equity is a government aim and there are policies which benefit the 'underclass' more than the upper class. take for example income tax in singapore. the lower class who earn less than 20k annually dont have to pay a single cent of income tax at all, while the upper class may have to pay up to 20% of their take home income.

so dont feel insulted by lky. he is just looking out for society's welfare by promoting the welfare of the lower class, and not letting them feel abandoned. remember that the government has policies in your favour to promote equity. lky may have not said it in a nice way, but his aims are for the good of society.

if you're not happy with him, just wait for him to die. although the government will likely remain the same and run the country in the same way, this sort of comments probably wont be made anymore. =]

on topic, imho bao zhang du hou gan (bao zhang bao dao) is the easiest type of chinese compo to write, as it requires general knowledge and some application only, instead of racking ur head to come up with some groundbreaking creative fictional story. just keep urself updated with current affairs (ie. light reading of newspapers, televised news, even sgf) and u will find it easy too

from a logical point of view, of course accidents have to happen before the govt looks into the matter. no accident = no one sees it as a problem = no justification to look into the matter

the accident occured while walking, and every trainee is expected to be able to walk (duh). also mentioned by kopiosatu, no matter how obese the trainee is, he should be able to walk if not he wont be enlisted at all. furthermore this should be a one-off incident and isnt a major problem worth looking really deep into and changing the whole training routine for.

im not saying that recruit andrew cheah's death is insignificant, but it was a one-off accident and does not represent a problem in the training procedure, and even more so not a reason to dissolve NS.

What matters is at the end of the day, it's the uni degree and college that employers look at when you go to work.

your pri sch prepares u for a good sec sch.
ur sec sch gives u an advantage and prepares u for the jc u go to.
ur jc prepares u for the uni u go to.
so whatever sch u go to DOES make a difference.

on topic, rjc's cut off for science was 3, arts 4, for last year.
most universities consider psychology as a Science nowadays.
many years ago it was considered as an art.

my advice would be to look at the requirements for taking psycho in uni, then finding ur subject combi that will let u offer those subjs while still being in arts stream

if u can make it into jc, why even think of going to poly?
does poly even have any benefits over any jc?
an A lv cert wil definitely get u into the uni course of ur choice much easier than a diploma.

furthermore, ppl think that they go to poly to get 'experience' earlier for their future job, so that they may be hired instead of their jc counterparts.
this is a BIG misconception.
ppl think that they wanna be researcher and go poly get 'hands on' experience, then when they look for job, they are hired by research labs to be lab tech: go there wash test tube.

paper qualifications are the basic things companies look out for (ie. 4 As for A lvs), everything else is an added bonus.
if u dont even have good qualifications, shudnt think of getting a better, or even equal job as someone who has higher qualifications than u.
