    • Hey, I have gone to the Peranakan museum yesterday and I looked through the exhibits. There was this short video clip being featured and inside, there was this man who said that there's not criteria (like wearing the traditional costume, eating the traditional food etc) for one to be considered a peranakan.

      Do you guys agree?

Sorry. I do not intend or wish to make it seem like "they were sub standard". In fact, the half chinese and half indian classmate I talk about is a high achiever and I'm sure you get to see him every now or then.

What I want to highlight is- the peranakan culture is slowly disappearing as people of mixed heritage are only allowed a single mother tongue language to be taught in school, thus resulting in many peranakan students who do not know much of their distinct culture.

Hence, should there be any changes implemented to our current educational system and our social mindset so as to preserve the unique peranakan culture?

    • As Singaporeans, how many of us have ever considered this question- What can be considered peranakan? Some may reply, "Sure I do, it's just a half chinese half malay person and his or hers culture."

However, due to the standardization of language, Singaporean peranakans are classified as Chinese and this results in the loss of culture. For example, one classmate of mine is half chinese half indian. Although he holds an indian passport, but he takes chinese as his mother tongue and he knows nuts about indian culture.

So the question is- To what extent can we generally consider someone "genetically peranakan" to be a peranakan in the Singapore we know today?

    • Thanks :D.

On a side note,  in my opinion, although peranakans are all over the region, Singapore has best preserved its culture. Do you guys agree?

    • Here's my reply to Shotgun.

About your last argument, I do agree that to certain extent, the "liberation of Tibet" can be considered an "invasion".

However, the point is that China, as a country with many provinces, each with its unique culture and historical background, should not just let one of its provinces be independent just because it is making a hell lot of noise on the international stage. Here are the reasons:

      1. The general good for Tibetans. If China were to let Tibet be on its own, Tibet will probably fall to become an even worse 3rd World country. That is due to economic and political reasons. As for economic reason, I have already described earlier on. As for political reasons, the power vacuum created by the absence of Chinese government will result in civil war between the religious leaders, Dalai Lama et al., or parties with different ideologies. Examples seen today are the Middle East countries.
      2. Reciprocality. If Scotland were to say that it wishes to leave the UK, will UK allow that to happen?
      3. Do all Tibetans want to separate from China? No referendum made. The general disapproval to the Chinese rule may just be set up by the western powers.

    • Wow. I didn't expect to get so many responses in such a short period of time.

Actually I'm working on a school project. I would just like to find out the public perception on the Peranakan culture.

Do you consider the peranakan culture to be something unique to S'pore?

Pls reply if possible and if you can, state your ethnic group.

      Thanks!!!

    • the most effective way to counter corruption is to have a credible check and balance in the system.

The problem is... the check and balance in Singapore is almost non-existent. Take note that you guys here complaining about PAP or individuals from PAP may be facing defamation charges if those PAP individuals want to. The way laws are made and enforced in Singapore needs to be improve. I mean even some aspects of our Constitution are not been followed. Part 2 14) of the Constitution states that all citizens have the right to assemble peaceably and without arms. However, if you gather with too many people, you risk facing illegal gathering charges. wow....

    • Boycott Carrefour. (just jking, lol)

Let me list down the self-evident reasons why the western powers, in my opinion, are the ones at fault for the situation we see today regarding Beijing olympics.

      1. The support for Tibet freedom from the western powers is clearly a political move to curb the growth of China and in a simpler sense, screw China up. However, no matter how much the western powers wish to screw China, it should still not entangle itself with a global sports event and ruin the spirit of sportsmanship.
      2. The western portrayal of the Chinese government is extremely biased. I guess this goes without explanations.
      3. Is China at fault for stopping a riot started by Tibetans with military force when there's already widespread violence and looting?
      4. Tibet has tax exemption from the Chinese Central government and it still receives 90% of its revenue from the central government annually. If Tibet were to be free, even though China no longer has an obligation to provide monetary aid to the area, but as its closest neighbor, China will incur losses since it still has to provide aid to Tibet. On the other hand, the western powers have no much obligation to do so.
I hope this will change your mindset. :D
