NUS ranks 18 in British survey of 200 universities

THE National University of Singapore has beaten several reputable institutions, including Cornell and Columbia in the United States, in a Times of London ranking of the world's 200 best universities.
NUS, placed No 18, was one of only the three Asian universities that made the top 20. The other two are Tokyo University and Beijing University.
American institutions took seven of the top 10 positions, with Harvard University garnering the No 1 spot.
Nanyang Technological University came in at No 50, ahead of Britain's Warwick and Bristol universities, and Australia's RMIT University, Macquarie and Curtin, all popular with Singapore students heading overseas.
The four-year-old Singapore Management University which specialises in business was not included, as single-subject institutions were left out.
The survey, published on Thursday, was a first by the British newspaper.
Some 1,300 academics in 88 countries participated in the survey which asked them to name the best institutions in fields they were knowledgeable about.
The ranking then took into account the amount of cited research produced by faculty members, the ratio of professors to students and a university's success in attracting foreign students and internationally renowned academics. -

Tokyo uni opt out of such rankings thingie. So don't be surprised the next time you don't see it being mentioned.

The quality of students does not seem to be a criterion in their judging... Oh well.... Nothing to be proud of unless one is doing research there...

Rankings not important. As long as I can go out there and carve out a successful path with something I learn from my degree, ranking is not important.

But they dun seem really accurate about it because they ranked LSE above IC and LSE and IC above UCL, but in the ranking of uni's in UK, IC was ranked about LSE and UCL took the top spot. Diff sets of criterias can produce diff results. -

beijing and tokyo r in the list of top 20... they appears to be better than singapore NUS if I am nto wrong. I am surprise tat we beat taiwan NTU or South Korea though

that's probably one of the biggest jokes i've ever heard man. ask anybody outside of s'pore about NUS most probably they'll tell you you "singa whatt? is that in china?" singapore is apparently insignificant in the eyes of the world. despite the fact that we claim to be a "developed" first world country, the world ranks us as a "developing" country alongside countries like turkey. we think our education system is good but singapore dosen't rank well in terms of global standards of education. if singapore were that good we wouldn't have lost 20,000 people to perth and thousands more elsewhere. have you ever seen a singapore-born billionaire? nope. i think that explains well enough singapore's failure to succeed in the world of economics, finance and business. have you ever heard of an australian or canadian wanting to leave his country because the "quality of life was not good enough?" i haven't. singapore disses countries like china with and india with a "superior" mentality, but don't forget, we need them but they don't need us. so what if we come up tops in international maths competitions? almost any country can crush us anytime. we think that our standards are higher than US school standards, but they before we even became independent they already made aircraft carriers, built 50 storey tall buildings and sent craft into space. did u even know that cambridge has a special S maths paper not offered in singapore because the standard is too high for us?
just in case you start flooding me with curses and stuff, i am singaporean and no, this post is not to insult s'poreans, but to serve as a wake-up call. "we're not that good afterall" -
The report in the TNP today has the most glorified stereotype of the different students in the 3 local universities.

I mean how can you ever compare between the 3 local unis in the first place. They are so diiferent. The courses they offer, the time they've been around.
But I guess its ego-boosting for students to know that they are in the Top 20.
which brings me to be rather upset by the slightly negative reports on NTU students.Bo Chup?Proud promoters of Singlish?

I never studied in a local uni because like you all, I think that it is not as good as some think it is BUT I noticed that sometimes there is some unfair bashing of our local uni too...it may not be so good, but it is not that bad afterall.
