Support the removal of "race" from our identity card!!!

This is a very sensitive problem, better don't change. Some people might say that we will lose our sense of belonging. Afterall, change the terms in IC will eventually waste our government money or waste the income tax money, part of the government money come from income tax.
Come on, use our mind to think of ways to make money, to boost the economy and to maintain our country as far as we could. -

Well, if racial identification is removed, i suppose the religion entry should also be removed. In singapore, some are more religious than racial.

I think this is not the case of being ashamed of their identity, many Singaporean Chinese do not know much about their identity. They cannot differentiate the difference between nationality and ethnicity. Everytime when Chinese is mentioned, mainland Chinese come into their mind and they cannot tell the difference between Singaporean Chinese and mainland Chinese, except that mainland Chinese are rude, not civilized.....all the bad things which they are ashamed to be associated with, but they can't tell who we are as Singaporean Chinese.Originally posted by stupidissmart:Funny... Our education system does not teach us anything about our own ethnic identity or root. And unfortunately most Chinese families also do not pass on chinese tradition so our children become very angmoh pai. Look at the malay, they never say they are ashamed of being malay. Visit any indian family during deepavali and you can see how much of their traditions are passed on and being kept.
LKY never said he learned Chinese because he was a chinese, even in the recent interview. He learned Chinese because China is going to take over Japan as the locomotive of Asia, ....blah blah blah. If China remained a closed communist state and Russia become economically prosperous, you will probably find Singaporean Chinese learning English and Russian, but I believe the Malay will continue to learn Malay, then English, and the Indian learning Tamil, Hindu....
Is this the necessary price we pay for our economic progress? no, taiwan, hk and korea retain their identities and progress no less than us.
This is one of those things I do not depend on what the government say!! -

Why we learn english is precisely because america and british r important countries for our survival. One reason why we put our race in your IC is because, during an emergency like an accident for example, it will help the paramedics & doctors on what can be done on you. Esp when it comes to blood transfusion and all.. Correct me if I'm wrong, but i dont think all Malays/Muslims are opened to that !
Certain medications can't be used on em either !

Since when this discussion has become a question of exclusion of anyone?
All I have advocated is the removal of race in our IC so that we can focus on being Singaporeans.
Regretably some of us in this forum has turned inwards and become defensive of their own origins and even religion! This is disappointing.
Obviously we are not a Singaporean Nation but a nation of divided by race and religion. If any PAP or government person is reading this, please concede defeat in your failure in the last 39 years of nation building!!
In the end of the day, you guys are just so involved in your beliefs that you have forgotten that today is no longer the day of race, religion or your own identity.
We are living in a new global world where the world- ie earth or even beyond is our home. I am disappointed that some of you have expressed xenophobic thoughts and beliefs.
Remember our pledge:
To build a democratic society, regardless of race, language or religion!
Stop these crap about your own identities- we are all Singaporeans, ought to be proud to only one nation or whatever your religion- SINGAPORE!

In the end of the day, the removal of race in our IC will bring us closer because race will no longer be a symbol neither will be conscious in time to come.
Indeed some of us may still hold on to our own unique identities- at home or in your own social environment, surely anyone will respect that.
However as a nation, we ought not to see ourselves in our own definitions, We need to advance ourselves beyond the limits of what our ancestors or our own beliefs restrict us to think so.
The removal of race in our IC does not mean a removal of religion.
Religion does not have national boundaries- everyone has his/ her own right to belief in their religion. We have to respect this.
However race transcents nationalities ie Malaysia, India, China or even Europe. How do we define intermarriages where there are inter-marriages among the races. Singapore will continue to have inter-marriages.
It is therefore necessary to remove race from our IC so that eventually race will no longer be necessary.
Some of you have raised the issue of emergencies. All our information are recorded in the national registry. We are very advance so much so that in the hospitals- your religion is known.
By the way, in a emergency, the utmost importance is to save one's life regardless of one's religion, regardless of the method used. Any sensible person will understand this unless he/she does not want his or her life which I will be doubtful (unless it is a suicide case)
Lastly I am sorry to have used a bad example ie Arafat on Juruselum. The point was not religious and not meant to disgrace the late leader. It was more of an example to explain that in life we all need to accept certain compromises so that all of us can live peacefully together. Please accept my apologies. I love any singaporean of any religion and have respect of any.

Yes, I still hold on to my identity as a Chinese but I never let it distinct myself from other races. Among my Malay friends, we still shake hands if they allow. It's just a form of respect for others. If they do not like to shake hand with you, it does not mean they are rude. Male Muslims do not shake hands with females. -

This "removal of race from the IC" idea reminds me of Texan traffic laws about 10 years ago. A law was passed for all new vehicles to have a speedometer to go up to 65 MPH only, regardless of the actual top speed of the car. The rationale of the law was that if drivers didn't know how fast their cars could go, they wouldn't push it to the limit.
In response to the new speedometers, Texan drivers developed a new game. They pushed their cars as hard as they could to see how many times they could make the needle go around the dial.
The intent of the idea is admirable; the stupidity of the idea, however, is incredible.
