I was reading the S.T today and there is one section stating that teachers are pressured by the parent's expectations. After thinking awhile, I felt that why these teachers are complaining, isn't that part of their jobs? After all, what more do they want, they get one of the highest pay in the civil service, teach real trivial stuff and practically just go through each day baby sitting teenagers who can listen to instructions. Futhermore they have one of the longest holidays given to anyone in Singapore. How, with the advent of the 5 day week system, they are really having it good. Teachers, please stop complaining and see how the others in the private sector are working. What you all are doing is really trivial to what they all go through. I believe the only bad thing teaching has done to you all is to make you all myopic about the world. Please do read up more and learn more about the world before complaining so much.

i think u miss out a "t" at the end of the word... i think you got the concept of teaching wrong. teaching isnt standing in front of a class and talk. it is to make sure the students understand what you are saying and also at the same time be there to guide them when they are lost or needed assistance. teachers also got to look out for the welfare of their students, physically or mentally.Futhermore they have one of the longest holidays given to anyone in Singapore. holidays? for all i know, teachers DO NOT have anuual leave. and during school breaks, they still have to go back to school to settle admin work, remidials and conduct CCAs.
i think you are the one who needs to get out more to see whats happening in the real world. -
Basically, teaching is a thankless job....appreciate the teachers, else there might be no future..
if parents demand the world outta teachers..might as well make children stay home do home teaching.... -

But I do find that quality of teachers nowadays compared to the past is nowwhere as good. i find it very disappointing that when my teacher friends said that alot of their classmates in NIE said that they are in it for the money instead of the passion which is very much the driving force of most teachers in the past. However of cos we should not undermine the job of a teacher becos there are still good ones around.

i have a fren who works for one of the big accounting firms who thought exactly the same as justicelegal. until one day her own bf became a teacher and she realised that he works harder than her.
from that day onwards, she never belittled teaching in comparison with any of the professions in the great and glorious private sector anymore. -
my personal opinion
i think the era has changed... the pressure is getting heavier and heavier... kids nowadays are really hard to control, compared to before, parents nowadays have higher and higher expectations of their children but at the same time, many are losing control over their children... how can you expect a teacher to control the kids if the parents themselves dont do some discipline on their part? teachers are meant to teach our children, NOT discipline them for their parents... nowadays, teachers cannot touch, scold or even comment, any such incidents are very very serious if some stupid parents complain... over protecting of children by parents is a big problem... and the worse thing is, even if their children are really in the wrong, their parents die die wont admit it... thats when its all lost... my friend mentioned kids nowadays keep testing the tolerance of their teachers, the moment you lose control, they can never be controlled anymore... many are joining teaching becoz there are no jobs outside now... its true they are just hoping to ride over the bad economy, but thats for MOE to settle them... what i feel is MOE should bring back certain punishments back to control the kids, its getting out of hands in certain areas... just my 2 cents worth...

I have experience teaching kids tuition and believe me it is their teachers who are redundent. I really wonder what the teachers are doing in classes. Everytime I teach them and ask them a concept, they will tell me that the teacher did not bother teaching them. I really empatize with the kids and I am in full disagreement with those who say I have no teaching experience. I really do home would be teachers here see this thread and learn how to be a good teacher. Do not just enter for money sake but understand that you are playing an important role shaping minds. The holidays and pay should not be viewed as incentives.

Teaching is not just one teacher to a few kids . It is a teacher to several kids (30-40 during my time in school)- some interested in learning , or some interested in troublemaking (like teenage me). Teachers have to be involved with the kids they teach - they see them in school on weekdays . Tutors are just not that involved since they only probably see them twice a week and one hr each?
I can comment that not all teachers are good but not all teachers are bad. Looking back at my teenage days - I gave all my teachers alot of problems. I was also good, as a teenager, at making tutors quit within a month - a record unbroken.
You cannot generalise one lousy teacher to other teachers. There are teachers who make an impact , like one of mine who thought I got more potential than the other teachers. She was patient with me and I respected her alot.
Teachers are also human.Employee welfare in singapore is not as good as other developed nations. All our unions are controlled by the government , not by the profession itself. Teachers have the right to make themselves heard , just like everyone else.
Let's face it , little princess, you have a right to complain about that one you know but not all teachers. Wait til you go to university - a lecturer will tell you to check the answers and get back to her. Why don't you work as an actual teacher for a year and find out how it feels like?

My advice : Just don't go near the healthcare professions because the healthcare professions have plenty to vent about. -
Teaching tuitions, especially one-to-one, is not enough to understand the problems faced by teachers. At home, some students guai guai one (like me) but go out to school like become another person liao (all vulgarities come out). there r still folks who teach becoz they want to la.. just that there r more peeps in it oni becoz it pays well -
I've encountered some very dedicated & caring teachers- will stay back till very late for revisions during exams, giving their personal h/p no. to students, buying them titbits/food to motivate them (all from their own pocket). Some even give lifts when the students have to stay back for CCA.
The best are the ones who help the average students to do better.
The kids will love the subjects if they like the teachers -

I am a real trained teacher in a particular primary school, taught for 6 years..can tell u full of shit.. most enjoyable part is interacting and teaching.. but damn part is endless admin job...now school is doing ISO .. waht the hell school is into ISO ? they call it the school excellence model...just a facade actually ISO in disguise..my poor staff allof us have to collect endless results..can u imagine how stupid.. they even want to know how well utilise the school field is ??????????? they expect us to monitor the usage..wat the hell? think we very free.....????
& holidays.. at the most 1 to 2 weeks ..sept, march holidays all burnt..remedial lessons....HODS even worse...only 1 week.. the rest must come back to plan timetable & do "COS" duty......HOD? where got time.. i rather be HOT (Happy Ordinary Teacher)
& also must take part in WITS..work improvement teams.. pareto charts..fishbones.. all wayangs just to get gold if not come back principal stare at u.. shit man...
how bout this.. u wan performance bonus in April? can.. so wat your results of your class is good.. not enough u wan a good pb? can.. initiate, undertake, volunteer projects that " will propel the school to a higher level"..make it to cluster or national level even better...
in school very difficult to mark your books.. all the time meeting & committes meeting..staff welfare,,fund raising, concert meeting,..........go back mark loh wat to do..ever wonder y MOE never announce the turn over rate?

But teachers in most schools do not have good students made for them. All students 'CAN' listen to instructions but they do no necessarily 'carry out' the instructions. The toughest job of a teacher is to gain the acceptance and rapport of their students, and if there is understanding and cooperation, i.e. students learn what is taught, do what is told, then both will find happiness, even if the exam results are not so good, because both have tried their best.
With your remarks here about your teachers, little girl, I feel sad for the teachers who have taught you, and I worry for the teachers who are teaching you. -

as in the sticky white substanc.... yur form teacher mentioned cum to the whole class? how in the world do they qualify teachers these days. 
But I also agree with spyder, students these days will try to test teachers tolerance. Have a friend who is a teacher at a secondary school, he says students these days are unruly and daring, many female students often try to tempt him.
