yeah but what he said about chinese service providers is true too, malays do a better job, and they do with a smile, chinese always laugh and say malays can't work, but actually its the chinese who mostly don't put in effort when they think the job in beneath them

actually i agree that malays are more friendly, infact when i go jalan kayu for prata, the ah neh there also very friendly. But there are also nice chinese waiter/ waitress around. Places like Coffee Club, some of the cafe cartels have quite nice service too.
I feel that it's TRUE that Singapore don't have a high service standard and most of the time, we feel so not worth paying for service charge. But the bottom line is, we keep an open mind about it. Maybe next time when we dine out, make a point to TEKAN the bad apples, and COMPLIMENT those good ones. But please don't discrimanate the entire service industry because of some bad bad ppl.

speaking about service, just something i wanna say, never offend the person who is serving you food, you never know what they're going to add inside, got friend told me that last time she work pub or something got one guy bump into her on purpose, her colleagues saw that and took turns to spit into the guy's drink

seperate issue, my friend who used to work at Jack's Place told me that they recycle the escargot shells. They actually use canned escargots and stuff them into the shells, after which, they will wash and recycle... i find that damm gross.... YUCKS! since then, i never dare order escargots at Jacks. -

every race has its bad side, as we're all humans. i know of fcuked-up chinese service providers, and equally bad malay service providers. working in the airport today, i had a bad experience. i was helping a transit passenger sort her lost ticket problem when i brought her to the transfer desk where her friend was speaking to a young malay girl at the counter. being from china, the passengers naturally could not communicate with the girl at the counter. the malay girl got fed up and openly insulted the passengers in front of them. my colleague helped to sort out the issue and at the end of it all, the malay girl told us to tell them in chinese that they had to make sure the agent processes the stuff correctly before coming to singapore. the passengers quickly replied "we won't be coming here ever again, so it doesn't matter".
i had to side the passengers in this case. being a service provider myself, i felt ashamed that such ppl were allowed to work in our airport. -

Just like today, I went lunch with my mom at a kopitiam and she was keen on ordering a plate of chicken without rice from the chicken rice stall, so i think she did not made it clear to the auntie that she didn't want the rice, so when the auntie ask my mom to pay $3 for the chicken rice, my mom then said she only wanted the chicken, without the rice. Auntie screamed at my mom for not ordering properly. WTF, you can always serve the order to the next customer. So she unwillingly say that the chicken will cost $6, take it or leave it...
I was quite upset by the fact she yelled at my mom infront of all the customers... but how much can we ask for? -
i tends to agree that singapore service standard are not as good as our neigbouring country.
take for instance for my last trip to HK/CHINA for work. im impress by the service standard dish out by the HK airport crew. from shops to custom officer everyone was polite. in HK airport there was also competition for visitor to vote for the most polite imigration officer.
in CHINA, the custom officer has improve alot too. they no longer throw your passport and place your passport on the table. some even at times dishing out a friendly smile.
Thailand ppl on the whole are friendly lot. not arrogant and most hotel staff are friendly.
Malaysia customer officer are less unfriendly these days. that why we seldom hear about complain about them taking brides. even TP in malaysia when hinting for brides often giving u a friendly smile for contribution.
singapore i must feel the reason for the drop in standard is because the turnobver for service staff tends to be high, singapore shy away from service jobs because of weekends shift. and high pride that they need to servce ugly and nasty singaporean. that why on the whole, we can only emply malaysia to work in service industry to service tourist in singapore.
one time i call to a 4star hotel in singapore, the receptionist just pick up and say ' hello" and full stop. and when i din reply her she say"hello" and full stop.
no point having a world class casino, enertainment center,resort, shopping center but third class service staff. are they going to do anygood to the service industry in singapore? -

But Tyhoon, I will ask that you tone down abit. People in the service sector are pretty stressed. I understand it is a part of their job but yet again we should be civilized and accord them the respect that they deserve.

I do agree very much on the high turnover rate for employment in Singapore's service industry. Nasty, Ugly Singaporeans ain't as much as most of us think. There is still a certain group but considered much better compared to the past. The thing about employing Malaysians to work in F&B is also quite a headache. As understood, they learn Malay as mother tounge, so their english command is quite low. but most malaysians are willing to work the hours and do all the hardwork. their stamina can be really amazing compared to locals. I have to admit that most locals can't take hardship especially the younger generations. Mostly they feel that they deserve better rather to work the long hours and have to humble themselves to serve others.
There are still ppl who take pride in their job but it's getting lesser. Honestly, i felt very insulted and dishearten when "Typhoon" posted the thread about his/ her views. Most of my co- workers felt angry too. But it takes everyone to understand that in every industry, no sector is perfect. Just that F&B, compared to other trades is underpaid, over worked. Even when goverment tries to encourage ppl to try F&B when retrenchment, ppl are really reluctant. Those who did try, couldn't adapt well from a 9-5 switch to long hours, weekend burn. Can't blame them. Those who are in the industry, struggling to do their job, ain't appreciated that much. Good one didn't get compliment, Bad ones hit the news.... OUCH! -

Hahah, u never mentioned anything about Malaysia immigration officer. Meet one last week when returning from tour via second link. He was much worst than any other Singapore immigration officer. His right hand was holding e hp, left hand opening e passport n checking!! Than when he need to stamp e passport, he put his hp in between his shoulders n continue chatting n laughing away! honestly, this topic about service standard in S'pore can be never ending. I just want to empahsis that SERVICE is not about nationality, race or religion. It's just a different sector/ industry that we have to interact with daily.
Like i'd posted on the previous page. Someone can start a thread about service and we can post our good/ bad comments/ experience, so companies/ ppl concerned can read and do something. this is the least we can do. Don't discriminate... Encourage the positive....

Being a tourist attraction, Sentosa should have maintained at least a clean physical outlook. If it was true that eating utensils were left cluttering the eating areas long after the users have left, there must be something wrong with the quality of service there. How can it maintain a positive reputation if it cannot even provide clean serviceable areas for the tourist?
Regarding the quality of service by retailers and other establishments, the onus is upon the service providers to produce the best performance for their customers. And that means turning around a dissatisfied or even an angry customer into a loyal one who would keep turning back to them for repeat businesses. That should be the desired attitude. If a customer is rude to the front-liners, they should keep their calm, and deal with them politely. It is an inevitability that these people bear the brunt for any mistakes made by the corporation, since they are the only contact point the customers have to address their grievences. Remember, errors will be made, and people do get angry. It is how one handles the problem that makes him a good or bad front-liner.
I prefer to be polite to any customer service officers that I talk to. Not only is it a break from the drudery of angry complaints, it also makes them more willing to aid me with my problem. So far, I've nothing that I can't resolve by being polite. -
i went to sentosa last yr... very disappointed... the seats outside burger king was not cleared... crows were flying all over, picking up food.... scary you know... service wise.... so so lar.. i didn't really buy anything or what, so can't comment much. But i sure know that the prices are Soooo expensive...
