population size is not an excuse to hide our inability to succeed. sweden, denmark, norway, finland all have population sizes around the same size as ours and yet they have produced global leaders in technology and innovation like Ericsson, Nokia, Volvo. IT IS NOT THE SIZE OF THE POPULATION, BUT RATHER THE SUBSTANCE OF THE POPULATION.
hongkies have had a long tradition of business and commerce and innovation. they've produced billionaires like li ka shing. singapore has had no tradition in the field of business and innovation, hence our inability to sustain our own economy without foreign investments and expertise. even our own Creative Technologies has moved its main facilities so Silicon Valley in california to stay ahead of competitors because singapore just dosen't have the brainpower to create new products and technologies. all sinaporeans know is to "study hard" and work for "gahmen"...if this continues we may jolly well see the demise and collapse of our country. if we're gonna stay ahead in this century we had better come up with some good ideas and produce some mega corporations like japan to help prop up our economy and reduce reliance on foreign companies. empty bravado and patriotism is useless without the tools to support it. without our own pillars of support for our economy singapore is as good as a soldier without a gun in the battlefield. a sitting duck. think of the vulnerabilities of the singapore economy...once foreign investments start pulling out there's virtually NOTHING to keep our economy going except GIC..which of course cant do much. instead of spending money on useless stuff like loans to other countries, esplanade, new mrt lines i seriously think we should spend the money more wisely on R&D like japan did in the 80s if not we;ll just loose out to places with cheaper and equally skilled labour like india.
