it is cool to have a casino, but think again, we have no casino before, later there might be many porb, familys, more gang memeber, and i think there is no advantage for us right?
And if it open onli to tourist, it is nt fair to singaporean.... so dun open... =) -

Yes, they are already many "gambling things" going on like stock market, toto, 4D, big sweep, horse racing, etc. The government had sanctioned these and had sort of some control over them as the operators of these "gambling things" are small compared to the government and many of them are some how linked - to the perception as government "run".
The government (under MM Lee) had never sanctioned casino (years back something was mentioned like "over my dead body"). Please check why was it so then.
The change of mind now is because Singaporean is mature enough today to choose to gamble or not (to live or die?).
And yet, in many ways in our live we are still being treated childishly. Chewing gum ban is one of them, and yet we do not ban cigarettes and smoking, which literally kill?

It is because there are alot of suckers in this world who run in knowing that they will lose. So who is to blame? The casino or the suckers? -

Casino, sure lose one. You bet one dollar on the table, immediately 20 cents go to the government as tax; 30 cents go to the operator. The remaining 50 cents is pool for "win". After few rounds, majority of the money is gone - to the government and operator.
Where as, if you go into stock market, you buy share with money that you can spare. You can study the market and "invest" in "blue chip" shares if you are adverse to high risk. Hold it (lock it up) for the rest of your live and cash it only when the need arises. That is how many "stupid investor" had safe guided their life saving through stocks and shares, by investing prudently.
Of course, they are also pundit (very cleaver investor) treating stock market as gambling pit and invest based on rumours. They can make it big but also can lose their pant in a very short time.
In another word, you enter the casino with the chance that you sure lose. Whereas you enter a stock market, you still have a chance to make good if you do not treat it as a gambling pit (hit and run). -

stock markets serve a purpose.. they allow legit businessmen and corporations to stablise their cash flow for one...
speculators take on the risks...
casinos are basically just nothing but speculators serving no other purpose than gambling
and kittycat, just coz we have it, doesn't make it right..
'sides, we can talk about this until the cows come home.. the gabrament has made its decision, even if there was a public outcry, it'll still go on.. and the people will then go back to their lives, but some will be ruined along the way..
i've read many studies that totally discredit the "economic purposes" of a casino venture.. as those who would argue for it, refuse to go deeper and check out the social costs in terms of hard cash that casinos bring with them...
me? i'll probably go have a look-see... have a couple of beers in there.. and then lose interest quickly...
however, looking at the long lines at the toto and 4-D booths, what do you think will happen to these hard-core punters? -

some of the differences between a casino and a stock market are:
1) casino gambling is a game of chance, but not investment in stock market. Investors need to find out more about the companies and understand econ and financial developments.
2) there are people who build their fortunes from stock markt, e.g. Warren Buffeit and George Soros, whereas there is none from the casino except the govt and casino operators.
3) one can lose money which one doesn't own in stock market, but in casino, losses are usually limited to what one possesses physically.
agree that it is not the casino or stock market that are at fault but the people. But since MM Lee said that Chinese are congenital gamblers, then why have a caasino so readily available to tempt them? -

why r u against it ? U can say they make some people poorer but they also meant tat they give people a job and money as well. Wat do u think of sentosa now ? How often had u go there ? Face it, singapore is a dead boring place and tourists aren't coming here anymore. Wat do u propose to pull in tourists over ?
Actually I thought they already have the go ahead and r planning on who to build the casino or who to be the main contractor now... -
my view..casino part of singapore infrastrucutre, provide entertainment
especially to those expats who come to singapore to work..
create jobs for singaporeans, singaporeans no need to go to Genting to play

but when it is here, they'd do this every weekend...

but somehow, those who will be unaffected initially, like me, will end up bearing the cost of the social ills...
because it will happen.. like it or not.. there will be increased number of people who are drawn by the easy access who will gamble their life savings away, there will be more desperation, there will be more children neglected... all these things have a cost which is hidden in the beginning... but will invariably bite you in the ass in the long run...
so, do the taxpayers pay for the damage control? you betcha! it's the only country we have!
the only people who will profit would be those who run the casinos.. simply because statistics dictate that the house will win in the long run, and people will get fleeced.. -

true, but isn't 4D exactly the same ? the odds r tat the singapore pool win money in the long run, and people get fleeced from it too. There r social ills from opening a casino but there r also social gains. Without casino, Las vegas is nothing. Some people may gamble their life savings away, some people may earn their life saving from employment of casino. Some children may be neglected, but some children may get the economic benefit from opening a casino as well. They will bite your ass, yet sooth it in another way too. U say tat it will be us who bears social ill, but it is also us who gain social benefits as well. Singapore become richer, gov become richer, less tax for us, more jobs with higher pay for us. We also benefit.
