GAMBLING addict John (not his real name) will be thankful if he is barred from the casinos, even if the ban is initiated by a family member.
It will be his wake-up call to do more to regain the trust of his loved ones, said the sub-contractor in his late 30s. He is now hounded by loan sharks for the mountain of debts he racked up to finance his soccer betting.
'If my family does that to me, it means they still can't trust me. I would have to commit myself more to these sessions,' he said.
John was among 13 recovering gambling addicts who spoke about the exclusion order at a recent 'gamblers anonymous' session organised by One Hope Centre, a non-profit organisation.
The Casino Control Act passed last week allows the National Council on Problem Gambling and casinos to issue orders barring addicts from entering the gambling halls.
Addicts can apply for exclusion orders from the council or the casinos, while their relatives can send their request to the council. The council is also empowered to bar social assistance recipients, bankrupts and those with poor credit records.
It was the first time gamblers have shared their views on the ban. Most of the debate so far has been dominated by politicians and community workers.
There have been concerns that gamblers will turn on family members if they feel they are 'squealing' on them.
One gambler at the session said he would squabble with his wife if she had him banned.
A former sales executive admitted he would be annoyed at relatives who sought an order against him. The unemployed 27-year-old is struggling under a mountain of debt totalling more than $100,000. However, he said: 'I'll be frustrated. Why do the authorities treat me differently from others? We are already very miserable. Why impose more misery on us?'
However, many of those at the meeting last Thursday backed government plans to keep the casinos out of their reach, though they said it will not stop them from gambling.
Said one: 'It is in the right direction. I will take it as an extra safeguard.'
President of One Hope, Reverend Edward Job, said his counsellors will explain to gamblers that their loved ones had them barred out of love.

If casinos are allowed in to bring in money for Singapore, why don't we bring in brothels and start a porn movie industry as well?

Can Singapore succeed with the Integrated Resort concept - when the idea of a casino is NOT DARING enough considering its scale is no where comparable to Las Vegas and no where even a shadow of Macau, with a timid attempt of having only two Integrated Resorts being built, and with both located at different parts of Singapore ?
Can Singapore be considered DARING - with the attempt of having a Casino - when the casino is not the main feature but hidden into a shroud of side shows that are supposedly taking Center Stage ?
We are definitely NOT the FIRST with the Integrate Resort Concept with likes of Genting Highlands-Malaysia; Cairns-Australia; Ocean City-New Jersey; and a whole list of similar concept of casino integrated family resorts that began in the USA.
Will the proposed Singapore Integrated Resort be DIFFERENT from what is available along the Famous Strip in Las Vegas, where the visitor will be spoilt for choice ?
Singaporean's attention should be focusing on the viability of the timid size and overall concept plan of the Integrated Proposals, but instead the concern is being directed on moral and social issues concerning the negative effects to Singaporeans.
A gambler will always take chances, no matter how slim the odds are stacked against him.
Can anyone cure the habitual gambler from the hunger in experiencing the adrenalin driven heights of expectancy to win against the odd ?
Can anyone understand what it is to be a "bankrupt" ?
"A bankrupt is one who has broken his bank"; or putting it in another way - "one who allow his bank to break him" - which explains the word "BANK" being part of the longer word "BANKRUPT" .
Why are we creating an opportunity for the "Bank" to bankrupt us ? -

Maybe we should considered the other way to encourage family of real gamblers.
Instead of family applying to ban their family members going into casino..We must have family's approval before even any members are allowed to gamble. Will that be better.
Family will no say that they regretted for never allow their gambling member to get rich faster..

A casino makes the bulk of the money from games of chance on the table, with the chance weighted heavily in favor of the casino.
Surely, you would have heard of roulette, baccarat, black jack, poker - just to name a few tradional casino table games of chance.
Added to this list will be the popular Asian games of chance with dice, cards, wheel, or other devices.
Slot machines are for mere passing of idle time, and no serious gambler will challenge his luck with a machine that is FIXXED to pay out after certain intervals or programmed conditions. -

I live in chai chee ave, ...there's aleardy a small casino at Block 36 . One of Singapore Turf Club's oulet.
The farking oulet is so small and there are always hundreds and hundreds people gambling there....everytime i walked in or rather I've to squeeze in to buy 4D...s h i t!!!..I smell the perspiration of the crowd looking anxiously at odds or results of horse racing. Littering. spicking on everywhere. I wonder what moral that our govt is giving to us or our kids living around that area? I saw children there waiting for their parents queuing up for horse betting..or sometimes I saw mothers putting their kids or grand children at nearby coffee shop and she went for horse betting. I even saw family sitting at coffee shop while the parents are gambling at the singapore turf clubs' outlets. ssssh i t.....is a word to our govt.
The farking singapore turf club is sucking loads of hard earned money from desperate singaporeans and making tonnes of money...why can't they have a bigger area for the gamblers or even with air-con. This one at chai chee avenue block 36....with only three ladies serving at 3 counters.
According to one of the ladies...she told me most of them are on freelance..meaning that as freelance workers. They will have no employment benefits.
You see....even a highly profitable leegal gambling den also not willing to take care of singaporeans.
One thing I also notice and felt strange...the lady told me she is working as freelance.... But I saw her working most of the time.
This shows how well we singaporeans are being taken care by our govt...... -
