i'm sure we can do with more medical and logistical support. it is clear now that some girls are very very resistant to the idea of helping out in times of crisis, esp in a more pro-active way. Even in peaceful times, they are reluctant to take up some responsibilities that they might be needed in times of emergency.
I hope this applies to some girls ONLY. -

but personally i do feel that we need to have girls serving ns, just not the same concept as poopie
because it is already scientifically proven that women generally are not as strong as men physically
so ns does not have to be military service for everyone, there has always been a need for manpower in other areas like maybe health? where girls can maybe serve as nurses? or maybe volunteers in homes? -

anyway, the female population taking care of the elderly and kids already need quite a chunk. taking care would mean shelter, food, water, health, etc liaoz.
those pple giving out water, food and providing health care also needed. maybe females can help out with the communications portion too? i'm not sure wat goes on in war, so i'm just thinking aloud based on movies and crisis that have happened and been broadcast on media.
and i really think my bf would prefer making sure he defends the frontline, while i grab my family and run, while the enemy is being held up.

Fair enough, I understand there must be people guiding the elderly and kids to shelters, but do you need 1 for 1 guiding? Do you need a person to 'distribute' food/water/necessities to every ONE other, 1 to 1? Big waste of resources here.
I am not saying that girls should be added to any specific vocation, i.e. combat. There are many other such as medic and logistics (incl controller, communications, store, arms store, cook, drivers, technicians etc) which they will prove to be of great help. Even when guys enrol in NS, not all are combat vocations! Preferably, assigning them to their relevant skills (aka related to their jobs/edu backgrd) will be ideal. Remember that we already have a shortage of nurses even during peace times, what will happen during war?! Also, training medics can prove to be very useful during times of crisis, not only during wartime, an example is natural disaster, terrorists attacks, etc.
No matter what role we play during wartime, I repeat: WHERES THE TRAINING? Getting prepared is very important! Who knows what to do or where to go during wartime? Dont think that we can still switch on the TV or listen to radio for guides, coz one of the first few priority targets during war is to shut down communications. No more TV or radio for you.

Men and women are made differently, otherwise why do women give birth and men don't? Men and women complement each other.
Fighting in the frontline is not the only pro-active way of helping the country in times of crisis. Taking care of the home, the young and aged is equally impt. I also know of at least one lady, wife of Chiang Kai Shek, who went to US to raise funds for her husband's party to fight agst the communist party. Back home we also have our heroine, Elizabeth Choy.
So, don't be jealous of us ok? -

Many times I have repeated myself, dont look at COMBAT ONLY. COMBAT is NOT the ONLY way TOTAL DEFENSE works. If u have read the other posts then u would have realised that there are many non-combat roles. Even guys in NS are not only being posted to the combat vocations, many are in support roles. I've listed some non-combat roles too, why didnt you comment that girls are unable to fulfill those roles?

I also don't know how u get to the conclusion that some girls are very resistant to help in times of crisis. All the girls who replied to this thread agreed that it was their responsibility to defend the country though they didn't give details. It was all those chivalrous guys who refused to let them do ns and were prepared to die for them!
And was there any real life crisis in Singapore where girls were known to have shunned responsibility?
Looks like your conclusion is all but a prejudiced misconception.
Frankly, without ns would u be able to tell us what exactly u would do to get yourself ready to defend the country?
