Singapore may be vulnerable to a tsunami from the east!

geography only mentions singapore is spared from most natural disasters eg earthquake, volcano. There is no mention that singapore wont be affected by tsunami and judging by location, singapore can indeed fall prey to tsunami waves from the east....not forgetting if iceberg melts, singapore will also be floodedOriginally posted by BaByBoY:agrees..

By right, as the waves approach shallower waters, it'll be like a road hump. By left, it gets slower and higher.
suppose we setup in stages several hundred km out to sea by the time reaches us it will not have any strength left.
I saw a documentry when I was teenager abt how china tried to tame the yellow river when they tried to build a dam for it. Initially they dumped hundreds of 25-75 ton boulders and concrete blocks it was useless as the water current was so strong it swept the boulders away and water rose so they started dumping stone blocks at different stages hundreds of kilometers away from the dam site to slow down the water and eventually they tamed it.
same concept can also apply.

let's imagine, a massive earthquake of magnitude 9.0 occurs in the South China Sea, creating a tsunami that speeds westwards towards Sg.
now a look at a map will reveal that the southeastern tip of Peninsular Malaysia shields us to some extent. if a tsunami really were to hit us, what do we have on our eastern coast? the first to get hit would be Changi East Airbase, and Changi Naval Base. we'll lose lots of RSN ships and F-16s, and sadly quite a few SAF servicemen as well.
thankfully, the Changi East area is otherwise not densely populated.
even if the worst occured and the tsunami were to come further in, it would encounter the flat tarmac, airliners and buildings of Changi Airport. here the economic impact will be huge, and people will die as well - but the airport buidings are obviously strongly built, and will protect the people inside.
even if the airport will have to close, we won't be totally cut off - we could reopen Paya Lebar and Seletar to commercial traffic.
we would definitely suffer. but we wouldn't be totally knocked out. life will go on. -
still cannot visualise how Tsunami can hit singapore badly.
firstly, if Volcanic activitries from phillipines really hit, it at most will hit some singapore light house. and east coast from Malaysia. almost all our changi was shelter by Pen. malaysia.
if hit from south, there are singapore southern island such as Sentosa indonesian bintan, batam to take the hit.
if one really wana see huge wave now, please go desaru now, wave hitting the beach as high as 2m in some beaches with strong winds and current. some part of the beaches can even be suitable for boardsurfing for this part of the season. play at your own risk.
