Why they choose to be opposition ?

They had it all... a good job, good education and life was definately better than most peasant... they could have just carry on and enjoy their lifes, But, NO...
They made themselves heard... and because of that, one is made a bankruptcy, one with on-going charge, and the other can't return to his home country...
Why chee soon juan, Tang Liang Hong and JBJ choose to fight with the pappies ? For fame, riches or for the people of singapore ? they are not whiners, they fight for a cause... although they failed, the least we could do is to respect them and give them a pat on their shoulder, when the path is often tedious and dirty..
Where most forumers here choose to enjoy their success, we often over-look how some poor fellow singaporeans lives on daily... some being retrenched and survivor means meal for each day is often a bonus..
Last year, singapore was high for many things, sadly, for all the wrong reason... we had high unemployment, high bankruptcy rates, high number of cars being scrapped, record low COE... all these prove that all is not well in singapore.. yet our GDP is peg at 8.1 %...
How many graduates was face with unemployment , when their places was taken up by FT ? They emphasis on education, but was given a tight slap in terms of employment...
Isn't that a sign that all things had failed.. If a company is not doing well, what is the reason? MANAGEMENT.. yes... you got it.. change the management...
we can also, by changing our management if they didn't do well... how many more years do we still give before we realise the mistake ? by then , will it be a case of too late ?
Its never easy to be opposition party in singapore... when most prefer to be arm-chair critics.. -
They chose to stand on the wall because they have a cause they believe in passionately, and though flawed like humans, at least they have more guts than us armchair critics who gripe and run away when inconvenience strikes.They choose to act on the belief that absolute power corrupts and every person, group or government is falliable and needs a system of checks and balances.No sweet talk is ever perfect and no persuasive promise can always be honestly delivered.We need to ensure that the people get what they deserve and ensure that the government is subordinate to the people's true wishes, not their purported desires.

Actually i am quite look up to those opposition party members,as they are in an absolute disadvantages when competing with PAP.As for the Chee Soon Juan case,i dont think Lou Goh need to sue this poor chap.Like i say before,if Lou Goh thinks that he has offended him,he can mocked at Chee in the parliament for his misbehaviour.Or if he thinks Chee is a maddog,he can totally neglect Chee's accuses.
But to my disappointment,he choose to sue him.Oh well,it seems like Lou Goh have a "big size body" but with a "small heart" to go along with.......But talking about him,do u guys realised that Lou Goh has aged very fast?His hair all white suddenly after quitting his PM post,perhaps he is getting raped by Young Lee n Lou Lee everyday after the Lee family has consolidated their power.

Let's not forget that Chee was given a chance to retract those statements that he made. Chee chose not to do so. You see, intelligent and dangerous people are usually unpredictable because they do not want to leave trails. In most situations, people try hard to study others and hope to find a cue to predict what they will do next. This allows them to have control of the subject and situations and to formulate a possible response. If a person is 'reckless', we tend to dismiss him or her as 'irrelevant' and will stay away from them but most importantly convince others to do the same. We do this because we live in a world filled with fear and whether that person is a perceived or real danger to others is not important.
As for the plebians, we are just too self-serving kiasu & kiasee and have become controllableand exploitable. Just drop a few hundred dollars of incentives (afterall, just return you some of your own sweat money), plant some nice landscaping to the pigeon holes and all will become 'yes man'.
However, the growing concern is that the rich poor gap is widening and this is a global phenomena. As the disgrunted and educated numbers (intelligentia) rise, more weaknesses and dissension of the current system will mount and these little incentives will not pacify for long as we are further encouraged to be practical. In addition, the simple explanation that meritocracy is present and sustaining our development will not work as new forces come into play. It will be even more difficult to measure the concept or degree in itself, much so convince others. So, the rich will always be powerful, and the poor will reamin that way, at least for some time. The rest will just be going nowhere, unless you have the connections. But this problem is not unique in 1 or some countries and for centuries it has been that way. Life is unfair, perhaps. However, there is this thing called evolution. older generations will always tell you that about every 1/2 century or so, there will usually be some wars, destructions, revolutions and plagues. Just yesterday, I had a heated debate with one of my friends on the opposition.
He argued that there was no need for an opposition because the PAP administration has taken great care of the country, and we should not rock the boat by introducing elements which will conflict with the PAP. He proposed that it would reduce the level of debate in the Parliament into a debacle of "chair throwing".
I disagree. The opposition, being a non-governing force in the Parliament, plays a crucial role in arresting any wayward influence on the executive branch. They scrutinise the administration's policies, and question them on any discreprency, thereby clarifying the implementation in question, or enables the abolishment of poor policies - that is, if people do listen to the opposition. There is absolutely no need for an opposition laden Parliament to descend into the chaos found in the Taiwanese Yuan.
As of now, the opposition remains an ostracised force, portrayed poorly and badly suppressed. They are supposedly anti-establishment and are willing to break a system just to get into Paliament. Hogwash. The plants of opposition have been crushed for a few decades now. A severly culled local media, a legacy of lawsuits on well-known opposition leaders (not to mention crackdowns in the 1950s) have all but killed the opposition. Given the toxic environment, there is no way that a prim and proper opposition force can grow to serve as the desired checking force to the PAP's power, just like how life cannot start under a deadly environment. -
Well we have Chiam and Low wat. They are people who can qn policy without throwing chairs. With people like Chee around there will be shouting match sooner or later. He will be thrown out then complain about his right to speak blah blah blah ... ...

Beside if they found out and do something, the P party twist and flops faster than the prata and always the opposition is mocked in parliment. Then the local people go support P party and so the opposition has no way to voice out an alternative view for the people. -

to be a good politician, being a lawyer will be useful. be a good one at that too. number 1: you know how to talk persuasively and with passion, stir emotions in others, ie emotive speech.
number 2: know how to bend the law so you can talk and get ard it. else you can be easily sued, esp in s'pore.. -

The impression the people have of the other parties here is that of scorn and poverty in ideas and funds.We have been conditioned into thinking that they oppose for nothing more than opposing, hence the title given to them "Opposition" which reduces whatever talents or ideas they have within their individual party ranks into something of a scorned entity, disharmonious and a thorn in the peace of Singapore.
Social conditioning is the main paralysing force in the lack of politcal debate, as the populace is now either cowed by the lawsuits suffered by politicians of other parties, or they have become meek and apathetic due to a all-powerful force that controls them, materialsim and economic survival.The state once commented that apathy amongst the youth is rising, and they hope that youths and the citizenry will be more proactive.However, they want to delineate the boundaries of being proactive and engaging people.And that is one of the most sickening and shameful things of our nation.The ability to be pragmatic to the extent that we have turned into serpents. -
The chances of the opposition getting enough seats to win an election are very low.
By voting opposition, you are not voting for an untried and untested government. You are voting for a more democratic and accountable parliament.
Right now that government, with 75% of the votes have almost ALL the seats in parliament. Its so Absurd its not even funny anymore. Singapore is illustrative of the problems with the First past the post electoral system.
The Constitution becomes a joke where the government has close to 100% of the seats in parliament. We need a healthy opposition to say "hold on a minute, let's have an open discussion about this become we jump right into it!". Its not happening now.
That said, as long as the opposition puts up a candidate who is somewhat presentable and who does not hold views that are totally at odds with mine, my vote is gg to them (if i get to vote that is hurhur - not funny actually). -
How do you tell your children when they come and ask you whether SG is a democratic society when never see you vote ever before?Can any MIW ever understand the shame that we have gone through because of gerrymandering?
