Named in 1643 for the day of its discovery by British seafarer Captain Williams Mynors, Christmas island was annexed and settlement begun by the United Kingdom in 1888 after phosphate was discovered in samples collected by the British ship Flying Fish in what is now Flying Fish Cove. Phosphate mining began in the 1890s using indentured workers from Singapore, China, and Malaysia.
The island was administered jointly by the British Phosphate Commissioners and District Officers from the U.K. Colonial Office through the Straits Colony, and later the Colony of Singapore.
Japan invaded and occupied the island in 1943 and interned the residents until the end of World War II in 1945. At Australia's request, the United Kingdom transferred sovereignty to Australia in 1958.
The first Australian Official Representative arrived in June 1958 and was eventually replaced by an Administrator. Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands together became Australia's Indian Ocean Territories in 1995 with a single Administrator resident on Christmas Island. -

Christmas Island was under the control of Singapore which was under Self-Government (ie self administration except Defence and Foreign Affairs which was still under British)
Chief minister Lim Yew Hock transfered the control of Chrismas Island to Australia for several million dollars. Lim Yew Hock was later voted out and Lee Kuan Yew took over.
Singapore should approach Australia to return the island back....... we will pay back with compound interest........

my dad use to work as a miner in the island for several years and return to singapore which obviously not a smart move. most resident there are from Singapore and malaysia and almost all have converted into Aussie citizenship.
most work in the mining company and island still remain untouch throughout aussie rule. however recently, there was a refugee camp for the afgans and russia plan to set up a small space station on the island (planning stage).
to get to the island, you can fly to perth and catch a weekly flight to christmas island. note that tickets are not cheap and easily cost more than AUD1500 per trip, min stay 1 week.
red craps still there, though recently of a much reduce scale.
population there reduce to merely 1000+ becoz majority of resident has move to mainland perth to buy houses and move in with their children.
use to have a casino resort there but close down many years ago due to inprofitbility which was own by a indonesian businessman.
How do i know so much?? becoz my wife is a christmas islander. she simply love the island. the last thing she want anything happen to the island is back to singapore adminstration.
forget about the island. no islander want it to be return to singapore and we sold the island not lend to the aussie govt. LHY simply was stupid enough. juz blame our govt. empress CIXI was smarter to load HK and macau to british but we sold it. second stupid besides Russia sold Alaska to USA. -

in fact few ppl in singaporean know much about him and Christmas island. why? probably the PAP now are trying to cover this chapter of singapore history as the unpretty ones. we should put the christmas island issue as a social education for the young ones. to remind one should never sold it motherland away in any circumstances.
we can blame LHY. why didnt the parliament approve it in the first place? can someone elightened me, which party was LHY in?

according to my wife. christmas island havent change alot since singapore sold to australia. and the islander prefer the unchange way of life esp aussie adminstration.
For those who are interested to see red craps, old singapore 4 storey flats you can fly from perth weekly flight to CI. Or alternatively i think indon also have some weekly flight too.
There are some house stay in the island. but bring more money coz flight from perth cost more than $1500. return.
