Let's just talk about ppl donating things be it they using it or not going too.
Let take the tsunami case. It not any charity show like the NKF or Ren Chi kinda things. It a natural disaster which cause heavy lost to lives and properties.
No one has ever think something like this will happen around this part of the world. So when it happen, lot's of ppl try to help in one way or another but it turn out to be a bit of messy in my own opinion. A called out for help was made and helps do come in all direction and huge effort. This is the messy part I am going to talk about.
Items that ppl bring in like clothings, blankets etc. As the papers and news reported, some bring in soil, torn clothing to the collection center. This do not help in the work at all as volunteer need to spent hours just to sperate this unuseable clothing from the useable one and than pack the good one in and throw the torn one away.
I am thinking, by donating this used clothings, why not donate clean and new one. You can pool $$$ amongst you friends and with the $$$, go to one supplier, tell him it for what, get him to arrange all in size, pack it and send it to the collection center in here or ship it out to the area need it.
It not only fast but you are giving new and clean clothing to those ppl who need it and also it is cheaper in terms of $$$ and time save. Just by sorting up all the clothing in size, make sure it clean just takes up lots of time if you really look at it.
I am not saying it not good to bring in old clothing, but for such a big scale events. It is best to plan what will be the best help you can give in the shortest time.
Just a thought.
There's a saying that goes, "You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.".
All in all... it's the thought that counts.
Either you give with thoughtfulness and out of love and compassion, or don't give at all.
