I was reading with amusement today's article in the STOnline. What would happen if PAP went bad. Thats a bit of a thought. Well in response, that is the reason for a multi party government. By vesting control in a single dominant party, there is the danger of nepotism happening. Although there might be percieved efficiencies to be gained from a single party rule, those efficiencies do not last. They degrade over time. ALthough credit has to be given for the ruling party's effort in raising the economic wealth of the state, it is time that they understand that change is a neccessarily aspect of that process.
I am neither for or against the ruling party but am more interested in the development of the singaporean society. I am interested in how the country can participate as a member of the global society cyet still operating under its present governance system.

yes, agree that present govt has done a lot for singapore but there are certain things tt they need to "let go"
wats the point of a new and young cabinet tt follows the old ways.....
oso need to improve on the democracy part, which some find non-existant....
they want ppl to speak up, when ppl speak, they get slapped....so ppl jus keep quiet loh.....since say liao oso dun make any difference......
we are small, we have nothing except human resource and relatively strong economy.....we can't follow the tradition model of governing a country.....
efforts have been made by the govt to improve things....but it's the ppl's mentality tt made the plans stagnant....
we too used to spoon-feeding.....when we are hit or left on our own, we are lost and expecting govt to help......no jobs lah, rising transport fares, aging population, etc.....
even dating and giving birth oso need govt to probe.....
most ppl oni see the blackmarks but fail to acknowledge the success....
we are blessed with housing, public transport, education..... aside from the over-glorifying that we are "world-class', i think in these areas we are pretty sufficient.....
to want to change the govt.....ppl have to change oso....
can see tt many youngsters have big ideas but jus lacking the proper channel and the listening ear to convey to the right authorities.....
rome wasn't built in a day and this generation is at the middle of a transition, so it kinda takes alotta adaptivity and flexibility...... -
You should be extremely careful when using the word "nepotism". Anyway, i agree with you that the current system is open to abuse. I'm not sure that it has not happened already, and one can only hope that things do not get worse.
Also, it is not in the present government's interest to change. They, the ones who are benefiting from the current system, should not be the one to be relied upon to change. It is the voters whose job it is to change them.
Vote accordingly (if you get to that is). -
I believe in an old chinese saying that goes something like this:
1st generation works hard to get to the top
2nd generation gains and maintains
By the 3rd generation rots through decadence
Go figure. -
Nepotism might not have been the best choice of words. Contextually it was referring to governments in general. Yeah, its true about the chinese sayings, am kinda confused as to which generation we are actually in. The 2nd or the 3rd? It is the exact mentality that is troubling me, the general lack of interest or maybe disillusionment.
Disillusionment plays a big part IMHO, its like seeing the problems and having the desire to try and correct it in a way through the act of opening up new avenues of thought and having that surppressed as it does not tally with the objectives of the organization.
Sorta like the experience of having burnt by fire lingering in one's memory. -

There are still a lot of capable people in both civil service and pte sector. one day if PAP really become incapable of running the country, these ppl will step forward. Just dun place your bets on current opposition.
