I'm sure schools have tried to introduce volunteerism to kids. But the effort shouldn't just stop there. And yes I do have serious thoughts about volunteering, not now as yet, 'cause I've just graduated and gotten a new job, still trying to settle in.Originally posted by crazy monkey:so u wanna to start by talking abt your own volunteer experience so others can follow your example ?![]()

if you wanna to volunteer why wait for govt to tell you to ?Originally posted by foxwalk:I'm sure schools have tried to introduce volunteerism to kids. But the effort shouldn't just stop there. You don't need to feel like you're obliged to go every week. It'd be good enough if we can all go once a month or something. Just promote the spirit that's what I'm talking about, and stop perpetuating the message that the only way to help is through monetary terms.
You don't understand my message do you. You're more interested in confronting me.Originally posted by crazy monkey:if you wanna to volunteer why wait for govt to tell you to ?
...and by the way commitment is important when a person wants to volunteer.
its nothing personal. i'm just replying to your postings.Originally posted by foxwalk:You don't understand my message do you. You're more interested in confronting me.
We're blind to the suffering of many.Originally posted by HENG@:used to volunteer at MINDS Jurong Garden. Opened my eyes to a lot of things I'd never thought was possible or existed in sg.
There are things done in education but it just seems to stop there. Apparently our campaign loving approaches by the government did not extend to encouraging peopl to do volunteer work.Originally posted by pearlie27:[quote]Originally posted by foxwalk:
[It seems to me we have a "money fixes it" belief. If someone needs help, all we know is "ok, where can I donate if I want to?"
It is very true that we do have a "money fixes it" belief. This is cos in Singapore everything is measured agst money, it is our culture!
The public media indeed has a very impt role to play in changing the materialistic slant of Singaporeans. Another way to rectify the misconcept is through edn. In fact these should be done immediately before we become rich but unhappy ppl.
If ppl are materialistic they would not have donate money in the first place.Originally posted by pearlie27:[quote]Originally posted by foxwalk:

I don';t think it's right to say that materialistic people will not donate. Rather it's the misconception that people have that money fixes all problems that is so prevalent.Originally posted by crazy monkey:If ppl are materialistic they would not have donate money in the first place.
If ppl want to do volunteer work they must be able to commit otherwise its better to just donate money.
Please refer to previous postings on where to volunteer.
if ppl dun donate then its a problem.Originally posted by foxwalk:I don';t think it's right to say that materialistic people will not donate. Rather it's the misconception that people have that money fixes all problems that is so prevalent.
I never said that.Originally posted by crazy monkey:if ppl dun donate then its a problem.
It not right to say ppl are materialistic just because they donate money but not time.
ok lah i dumb and stupid. anyway you got time go ahead and volunteer can do your bit by encouraging your frens to join you.Originally posted by foxwalk:I never said that.![]()

I said MISCONCEPTION. Why do you keep misunderstanding what I mean?
Sometimes, money still needed to transport stuff and pay for bulk refuse removal when people donate useless stuff.Originally posted by foxwalk:Why is it that during the Tsunami fundraising period, people tend to focus on only monetary service? What about being there physically to help pack the foodstuff, etc, or volunteer services at the tsunami hit areas by doctors, nurses, with the government sharing or footing the cost of transport?
Btw, I believe the Singapore International Foundation is sending youths over to Banda Aceh in June. So, don't get so worked up ok? There's still hope for change. The true test of how compassionate one really is will be six months down the road, when Banda Aceh no longer merits a headline.
Will there still be hundreds of volunteers queueing up to help rebuild the lives there?
