But there will be changes to it, he said during a dialogue session with some 100 Singapore students from JCs, Polytechnics, ITEs and international schools involved in the Third WorldView Youth Conference.
The minister also said that though changes are in the pipeline, they will be achieved in steps and at a pace that will allow both teachers and schools to follow.
These changes will soon culminate in how students will be assessed.
Mr Tharman said, "By year 2008, we will have the system in place where every student when he leaves school, will have a testimonial that will record his full set of achievements, not just academic grades but everything else, in CCA and in CIP and so on.
"It will be a qualitative form of assessment, and we're trying to encourage that, giving the schools more leeway to assess the child based on what they think he or she has really done, whether they're exceptional, whether they show leadership, whether they show initiative, or whether they're just doing things for the sake of doing it." - CNA
