Mr Lim Hng Kiang say the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star). spends $900,000 on each of the young scholarship holders, seeing them through their basic university degrees and also PhDs.
The Straits Times reported " Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang said Singapore needs such local and foreign R&D talent to help ensure that investors stay, expand and set up their research facilities here. "
The cost breakdown: $200,000 for a three-year Bachelor of Science course; $400,000 for a five-year PhD; and $300,000 for living costs, book expenses and other allowances. He also say," At present, 199 or 23 per cent of its 878 PhD holders are Singaporeans."
Do we need to spend so much on foreigner who may not in the end stay in Singapore???

yah. Why not? my SS teachers used to say that FT increase the competitiveness of our workforce. Without them, Singapore's economy and job sector will suffer

Wait.. Is these another case of "honest error" to plug certain holes ?
The $ seems excessive even in rupees.. Must be studies plus fully paid villa in spore. -

Face it, they are the elite. A million dollars for an elite...that's reasonable.
We are the ignoramus, the non-elite....a dime a dozen. Singapore is too good for me... -
What if they were to break the bond?
Remember the trainee teacher? who was asked to break the bond cos she she failed some of the modules. She was asked to pay MOE something like $200 per month for 14 years (if i can remember correctly).
So if the 1 million scholoar were to break the bond, imagine the amount she has to pay.
That $1 million probably serve as a deterence, one should probably ask for more specific breakdown of that $1million. -
Stop buying the propangada nonsense of the PAP for crap's sake. Even if they are talented pple, they dun deserve to pay less tuition fees compared to ordinary S'poreans.
Other countries still take care of their local born citizens while having a good immigration policy. S'pore unfortunately throws money at anyone who is a foreigner and 'talented' while neglecting local born S'poreans.
U say chinese FTs shd have it cheap here- well nw u dunno, but once u do ur JC and local Uni education and cant find a job bcoz there r so many jobs being occupied by ur former PRC JC friends, then u will start complaining that there are too many fake FTs around.
