The present economic model of Singapore = Big fish eats small fish = full-fledged unlimited Capitalism = GLCs, big corporations survive at the expense of local small-man enterpreneurships and smaller businesses, = rich becomes richer and poor becomes poorer = Unequalled opportunities in public sector to smaller Domestic SMEs of the economy.Originally posted by gerrykoh:We not only need to revamp Orchard Rd but also have more varieties of shops. All shpg ctrs. have the same tenants like NTUC, Giant, Bossini, Giordano.
The shpg malls in Tokyo, HK, US, London etc have very interesting & unusual products, specialty stores. There are also weekend & night mkts. & food stalls. There are so much to see & do.
That's why even S'poreans shop overseas

NTUC and Bigger businesses grow while SMEs will shrink. Domestic and Small-time entrepreneurs will be stifled and die a natural death.
A More Equitable and Fairer system of capitalism = allow an open category in all public tender to evaluate alternative proposals/ideas of small operators and new entrants to business (supported by good ideas and concepts like the new handphone of Singapore make Zircon or what have you).
Lower the barrier of entry to domestic SMEs to sustain the domestic sector of the economy. Foreigners will come only when Singapore has its own self-reliance in business investment strategy which at this moment Singapore does not have.![]()

NTUC, GLCs and foreign companies are hurting the Domestic SMEs. If tourism is to grow, say after casino is built, the existing policy of granting licences to bigger fishes and foreign companies should change to one of helping new entrepreneurs to enter business.Originally posted by crazy monkey:out of point
wat has this got to do with tourism ?![]()
so instead of one casino issue 100 casino licence to local operators ?Originally posted by robertteh:NTUC, GLCs and foreign companies are hurting the Domestic SMEs. SMEs are the most self-reliant part of the economy. They will provide an alternative to employment which government cannot promise in the new age.
The brand of capitalism currently practised is "big fish eats small fish" and is wrong and should be changed or at least not to be encouraged further.![]()

Read carefully, I am not asking for issuances of casino licences to our potential entrepreneurs. Surely lowering the barrier of business entry to smaller players is not all that bad, is it?Originally posted by crazy monkey:so instead of one casino issue 100 casino licence to local operators ?![]()

Except for easy administration in not wishing to get into scandals or explanations to higher up, what other reasons are there for not accepting public tenders submitted by small players possessing good idea with entrepreneurial proposals.Originally posted by crazy monkey:lowering the standards good also ?![]()

Why can't public tender system include an open category to allow good ideas from smaller players who might even lower costs. Why must every tender be based on track records when new ideas are hardly supported by track record.
Don't forget that every big company has been small once. Don't forget this fact. Sim Wong Hoo was a small fly once too.![]()

Agreed. I was out of point. My apology to Crazymonkey.Originally posted by suntze:Robertteh,
I think monkey is right; this thread is about tourism and you are out of point.
However, you do have a point about insufficient support for SMEs. There is some recognition of this issue and hopefully more efforts will be made to support local entrepreneurs. The T&I Minister has recently rejected proposal to form one central authority to spur growth of SMEs. I suspect the conclusion is that local entreprenuers will only play third fiddle to MNCs and our GLCs in driving the economy.
On the issue of GLCs domination, I must say I prefer our model of economic growth vs for instance, that in S Korea, where opportunities go to chaboels and the wealth is held by selected families. With our model, the wealth generated by GLCs is held by the government for the benefit of the nation (hopefully).
Back to the topic on tourism, rather sadly, Spore lacks natural scenic attractions. Our strengths are in tourism linked to services such as education, medicine, conventions, media and entertainment (Jakarta hosted a recent jazz convention, we should be able to do something better), etc.
The authorities is supporting international events organised by business groups. But, in addition to mega events such as the forthcoming IMO conference, more incentives could also be given to local business groups to stage events and conferences here.
Similar support could also be given to professional bodies, for example, engineering, medical, financial, hotel societies, and interest groups in, for instance, horticulture, tropical fish , rock climbing, diving, etc. This will draw attention to Spore and raise the profile abroad as an interesting and fun-filled destination.
Obviously the casino is the latest effort, having failed to secure a Disney theme park some time back. Personally, I believe a casino could be commerciallly successful and draw in tourist $$; however, careful implementation with safeguards to minimise social cost is absolutely essential.
you talking about 1-2 day seminars or exhibitions will draw in crowds but will earn us penny-ante $$$ for the effort, not like well heeled hard core loyal fans that will spend like no tomorrow and come back again & again every year like football fans like F1 fans who will fly down, stay at our hotels eat at our restaurants, buy Football or F1 racing Jersey and accessories, this kind things we should concentrate on.Originally posted by suntze:Robertteh,

I'm thinking more abt WWF yes world wrestling federation, see the crowds at the coffeeshop whenever there is wrestling on the telly. both young and old people even some ladies and I noticed especially Malays love to watch wrestling.
If we can somehow buy a stake in WWF, just think we can influence matches to be held here annually like maybe "Christmas BASH", how many die hard wrestling fans from nearby malaysia, indonesia and thailand will come here, and if we get the wrestlers to make guest appearances in orchard road or hard rock cafe or zouk, fans will go nuts.
how much ticketing sales, tourists receipts, advertising dollars we can make and what abt broadcasting rights, now thats what I really call making this place really fun and making tons of money in the process.
And if we do well in ticketing sales I'm sure many other sports organisers like heavy weight boxing would also want to host matches here.
