it is definitely not going to work. since when the govt listen to its people. we can rave and rant all we want but in the end we still have to accept that the decision is beyond us. welcome to the new world!!

If the govt put in the following policy, I believe smokers though may not be eliminated but may smoke lesser or lesser smokers:
For every packet of CIGGIES you buy, you will:
1) NOT be entitled to ERS, NEW SINGAPORE SHARES.
2) need to show your IC, fill in a registration form and wait 3 days for approval.
And using that form, for every packet they approve to sell you, you will be
taxed 500% of the price of the CIGGIE.
3) Income Tax will be based on your annual income + any other income + the
amount you spend on CIGGIES (info will be collected by the form in item 2).
The rationale will be since you so rich and thinks that CIGGIES benefit you, I
am sure its ok to tax you.
4) Need to pay $100 for a packet of Centori and $150 for Marlboro.
5) Need to bid for a EOS (Entitlement Of Smoking) similar to COE.
6) Need to buy SMOKE TAX Similar to Road Tax.
7) Need to wear a box over your head while you smoke so that only yourself
will smell the smoke.

Currently all we see in the papers and in the news are smokers whining away about their loss of places to smoke.
Let's see which politician will have the balls to stand up in parliament and propose a total ban on cigarettes! That guy will have my full support! Even if he's from PAP! -
But that's the whole idea, see, since the govt daren't ban smoking, they can make it so difficult and troublesome for these lung killers to get just a pack of cigarettes that they'll seriously consider quitting altogether. NO, no..of course the government will not ban smoking.
When you want to raise more taxes without getting flamed in all the sg forums, what do you do? Tax cigarettes... perfectly acceptable.
