I have tremendous respect for opposition party veterans like Jeyaratnam, Lee Siew Choh and present day MPs like Chiam See Tong and Low Thia Kiang. I do not agree with all their views but I respect them 'cos there is alot of sacrifice to put up with being in the opposition.
You have to be whiter than white: any misdemeanour will certainly be dragged to the front page of the newspapers and your sins magnified many folds. Even if they cannot find any hidden mistresses or undeclared income tax 20 years ago, they can still humiliate you by telling the world your miserable grades at the 'O' Level examinations when you were 16 (ask Chiam See Tong about that). If you are a civil servant, you begin to wonder if your career will come to a screeching halt...it probably will.
With so much stacked against you, will you still step out for public service in the opposition camp? I am ashamed to say that I won't. The truth is: I don't love Singapore that much. What about you?
