The PAP men in Aljunied GRC. Workers Party should have won that one the last time round if not for some dirty maneuvring that saw them disqualified.![]()

I live in the aljunied grc area... there has always been a walk over, no chance to vote.
I din know that the WP are active here. Can you give me more information about them in aljunied grc? do they do any good works here that I may feel that they can take care of this grc than the pap?

One or two more opposition members elected to parliament will not change things very much. Now the opposition parties individually are weak and not credible.
Big changes will happen only when the oppositions are united into one big party with proper manifestos adopted to serve the younger population. But good candidates have been bashed down and cannot get up.
New ones are not coming in to serve who are of good standards. People cannot blame the opposition candidates or parties as this problem was created by the people themselves and the incumbent in power who are too kiasu for the country's good.
If the opposition can join up immediately, they will get the right and timely signals and all Singaporeans will begin seriously to vote for alternative views and solutions in the coming election.
Opposition leaders themselves may have to make some sacrifice and accept lower position in the merger to let those with high quality take the lead for all to succeed as a team. Without some personal sacrifice all of them will fail again in the next election as people will just have to accept whoever the incumbent offer.![]()

The present Aljunied GRC includes remnants of the hotly-contested former Eunos and Cheng San GRCs. I wouldn't be surprised that WP wanted to contest that ward in 2001 and PAP, realising their gaffe in gerrymandering, decided to disqualify the WP team on a technicality. I don't think a PAP man would need to go through so much trouble even if he made the same mistake as the WP team.Originally posted by Tuatau:Ever since its formation, the Aljunied GRC has been contested twice in 1988 and 1997. The WP candidates who were disqualified in the 2001 elections over a technicality, were led by Assistant Secretary-General James Gomez. Good works, I don't know. All I know is that the GRC holds strategic advantage being geographically adjacent to the WP-held constituency of Hougang. The WP would be able to leverage on Low Thia Kiang's popularity and consolidate their political foothold if they had won over that GRC.

Actually a lot of the missing voters, excluding those who kena walkover, are just people who are too lazy to show up, or those that give up, thinking that their vote will not make any difference. But I do remember that in Singapore if you don't show up, the govt will strike your name off the voting register for the next GE. So, like flying the flag, voting is also apparently a priviledge and not a citizen's right in Singapore. People who work/study overseas are also not allowed to vote, which is truly stupid.Originally posted by macjoe:Definitely not VOTERS!!!
After every past election, we keep seeing less and less Singaporeans
vote. Somehow the ones who are voted in changed the rules to keep
the voters out of voting!!!!
So I'd vote for those who will enable more than less Singaporeans to vote!!!![]()
Many Singaporeans are obligated to vote for PAP because they either work in Statuary boards or Government sector. Even though voting is secret, it is not so in Singapore. Otherwise how can they know which area supported PAP and get a chance to upgrade their flats faster?Originally posted by miong:PAP's past habit of forming GRCs at the last minute were undemocratic.
It denied many Singaporeans the opportunity to vote.
You may argue that it was the oppositions' fault for being unable to come out with enough people to make a GRC team.
PAP used a long term strategy of grabbing clever people in the colleges, universities, stat boards and GLCs - to add on to their list of potential MPs.
Opposition parties do not have that kind of access or authority to do that. But that doesnt mean they cant do the same. You vote them in, they will have PAP's people sources to build up a strong party.
It really amazed me in every GE many Singaporeans approved bullying tactics used by People Action Party. Singaporeans approved? Of Course! How else can you explain the big victory margins they gave PAP in every GE.
Where were the protest votes?
Come people, show the world we are not a lot of 'wooden' people.
Dont allow cheap freebies to buy over your freedom of expression and rights .
Oh great, using "filling forms game" to disqualify WP candidates, really "mature"!!!........Grow up,dudes.Originally posted by Tuatau:For those who may have forgotten, the PAP won a walkover victory in Aljunied GRC in 2001 because the WP candidates did not fill in their election contest forms correctly, and were subsequently disqualified.
BG(NS) George Yeo is a pretty strong incumbent and has been serving as a Member of Parliament for the GRC ever since it was formed in 1988. The opposition would have to put up a very good fight to unseat this mainstay candidate in the next election.
Anyway, if the ruling party feels that there is any constituency that may be politically weak, they could always gerrymander and split up the electorate to weaken the opposition vote.
And moreover,Singapore is not a big country, only a tiny island, want to invent the GRC election for F**K?Our leaders only show other politicians from other countries that they are "narrow-minded,petty,not gentleman n have a loser attitude",SHAME ON THEM!!!!Originally posted by activator:Anyway...election in S'pore is never democractic in nature...where got GRC in any part of the world except S'pore man...

Hahaha, many a times, nothing can really get away if a person make alot of terrible mistakes.Even if can,it is also temporary, cannot last one.Originally posted by av98m:The members of the ruling party are masters of the art of gerrymandering what....I bet lots of political parties from other countries envy the fact that they are able to get away with it in Singapore.
