Personally, I felt that even if there is no other candidates standing out for the election, the norminated candidate should also go through voting to gain the mandate from the people of Singapore.
That is what I like when Lao Goh took over as the P.M. He stright away call for an election to get the mandate of the people.
Junior Lee should have practised that as well. Otherwise it would looked more like being inherit the title rather than to earn one deservingly. -

President Ong Teng Cheong is a classic example of how MPs and ministers ought not to behave in Government.
"either you are with us or against us.."
He was apparently neither - he was for the country! Unfortunately for him, and he should know better, he lost out. He was given the pariah treatment.
And deliberately erased from public mention were his major contribution to PAP's long overstay in Parliament House.
That my friends is a perfect example of the real face of the power hungry Lee regime. -

President's duties are mostly ceremonial.So his contributions are not much.
Ong TC was a minister & DPM and he contributed a lot to the country (no doubt he is well remmunerated).Wee KW couldn't compare with him.This should be the criterion for judging these 2 persons. -

So why did LKY decided Pres Ong Teng Cheong had to go?
This was what Pres Ong had to say about trying to perform his duties as an elected President and got him into deep trouble with the old dictator :-
".... Ong spoke frankly about the obstacles he faced as Singapore's first directly elected president, as he sought to define this new role. In 1991 the Constitution was amended to elevate the presidency, previously an appointment, from a strictly ceremonial post to one supposedly with some teeth. The key changes were to grant the president veto power over the use of the country's reserves as well as over key government positions. But by Ong's own account, his job was not an easy one. Of his encounters with the bureaucracy, Ong said: "I suspect [some ministers and officials] consider the elected president a nuisance - checking on them, looking over their shoulder."
While Ong mentioned a "long list" of problems, he elaborated mainly on his attempts to test his authority as guardian of the reserves, estimated at nearly $75 billion. Upon taking office in 1993, he requested an accounting of Singapore's vast assets, financial as well as physical. The accountant-general initially responded that it would take "52 man-years" to produce a complete list. Ong didn't back down; the list was finally submitted nearly three years later. The government said it would address Ong's remarks at the next sitting of Parliament on Aug. 3. ..." -

3) Do what you really want to do NOT what you are told to do. WKW dies a happy man because he has really spent his previous time with his loved ones & treasured those who are with him.
4) There is a trade-off for everything in life. You gain some but you will lose some too.
5)Not all human beings are created equal. But every life counts.

Cabinet made such kind of decison!
The former president Ong was not given a state funeral.That was a decision made by PM then GCT and his cabinet.So the cabinet with more than 15 highly distinguised miniters could make a decision which was not based on merits! -

When there is such a complete disregard for truths, objectivity and decency, it is only to be expected that all the decisions and policies emanating from the same men will go to serve narrow partitioned interests.
No wonder Singaporeans are having so many problems without any hope for earlier solutions in sight yet.
When confucian morality and "Da Dong" have been discarded to the dust bin how can there be any more governing authority to call upon citizens to build nationhood, family and social values. As long as objectivity is absent, there will sadly be protectionism of elitism and self-interests. I wonder how anyone can help to decide what is right or wrong, merits or demerits when so many in charge of our wellbeing are so obsessed with protecting only narrow self-interests. -

By not giving former president Ong a state funneral,it gave a message that the contibution of a govt minister is not much or valuable.So why do they pay themselves so well then?

Looking back in history....Ong Teng Cheong pushed for the MRT to be built in Singapore while Mah Bao San was against it, citing high costs.
