On the flip side, there are also families who speak only dialect and mandarin to their kids, leaving them with little or no practice in speaking proper english
But seriously, with so many people from China taking up citizenship or PR in Singapore, there is no worry that the language will be dead here. -
it's a disgrace. local chinese are being pragmatic by being proficient only in english. we should do business with westerners, but we should not believe they will treat us as equals, because they will always place priority on their own ppls' interests. it is only with united identity as chinese can we stand up to foreign oppression. Lemme see. If I get no credit for o level chinese language, no one gives a flying fcuk. If I flunk english language, thats the end of me.

It's not just the parents faults. Majority of the blame must go to the gov'ment! They make it in such a way that Chinese is NOT SO IMPORTANT....Take for example the announcement in the MRT when it reaches a station, it's only in English! what kind of chinese is one if he cannot speak his own language? many blame it on westernisation. but i have never met or heard of malays or indians who cannot speak their own language!!

The term "banana" seems to be an exclusive term for the Chinese race. One has not yet heard of a similar term used for the other races in Singapore. Those who know of any, please share with us.

I'll say that most of the fault lies with the gahmen....but you can't put all the blame on them also....dun forget we've mulit-racial society..so better to use one united lang in all our education and affairs, if not if the govern promote one-sided use of lang...can be easily blamed for (eg) Chinese/malay chavenismOriginally posted by chonsou:It's not just the parents faults. But then again, it's also a very convenient excuse for the gahmen to purposely promote english-that's the lang where the $$$ is.
The gahmen aggressively promoted english in singapore at a time where ang mo expats are treated like gods.....USA currencies and hollywood actors all number 1...so the lang ? English..to make singapore more "ang mo thus commercial friendly"
So now the gahmen now sing diff tune....the sleeping dragon has now woken up......so even in breathing, fire must come out also

English is "Keeping My Mandarin Alive"
The book costs $28 and comes with a DVD featuring snippets of the interview and computer software that he uses to learn Mandarin

if they want more people to learn chinese they should make those damned characters simpler to memorise. and chinese textbooks should not be stuck in golden eras long gone but look to the future instead. no use biatching about 5000 years of history, focus on the future.

For goodness sake, please don't learn only han yu ping ying. go to china, hk, taiwan, malaysia and anywhere with chinese words, say you know chinese but you can't read, belly malu leh. Better not say yu know chinese. -
when i read HK newspaper and lao fu zhi a lot of words dun even exist in dictionary. HK standard of chinese must be very high can invend their own words.
