Is it wrong to use an agency's money and speak frankly on how the agency can improve itself? The scholar involved was concerned about the direction A*Star was heading in the way it conducted the KPIs and benchmarking for their performance, which basically skewed the weightage towards academic grades rather than actual research output and efficacy.Originally posted by bratpig:Personally, it does not matter to me where you choose to make your stand or opinion. A whiner is still a whiner. Everybody should understand that a blog is no longer a personal diary that you can keep hide. It is hosted in public domain. You should go read those newspaper articles on bond-breakers first before you condemn Mr Yeo.
Mr Yeo has that one thing which those whiners do not have. He has passions in his work and company. Remember how much he contributed to EDB. Those whiners do not have passion. They only care about their own gains.
By the way, you have yet to answer me. Is it right to use other people's money for your education then go on and whine about how pathetic that person is? Is this how you want to see the society is degrading into? You like ingrates as your friends?
P.s. I admire Mr Yeo for his passion and character. These are what seperates the boys from the men.
How in the world would you know? Given the lack of genuine transparency in these government organisations, as well as the fact that, as we know, Singaporeans are almost never told the truth about anything that reflects negatively on the government, it is nearly impossible for anyone to accurately gauge exactly how much of a contribution these organisations have made to Singapore.Originally posted by bratpig:without EDB getting more foreign investment, you would most prob be sweeping the floor and eating shat now
that was a side issue meant to lighten the mood la....Originally posted by karn123:2)
Regarding what someone said in page 1 about the female scholar having intellect and looks, so what? She needs wisdom as well as MORAL, KEY aspects of a person imo.
Yes, EDB might have made successes in the past and now.But we need to realise that it is not God, and infalliable. They need to realise that words hurt as much as action, and reactions will abound. If they do not care, then it might be back to haunt them.Originally posted by NuLife:this i have to speak up for philip yeo thou...
in my understanding.. b4 the days of phlip yeo and astar...
things were so much worse...
the seggregated uni-linked institute were known to be
a place to 'idle' and a tax payers money wasters in the industry..
eg CWC, DSI, etc...
i myself is in the R&D industry and have heard alot of bad things
abt them then....and wud definitely not want to join any of
them and spoil my resume....
but even now... i have frens in Astar who still say things
arent goin that well....but at least superficially to me...
via media astar did one thing rite: glamourising R&D field...
its one way to attract more people..

i meant Astar progress not Edb....betw...;pOriginally posted by LazerLordz:Yes, EDB might have made successes in the past and now.But we need to realise that it is not God, and infalliable. They need to realise that words hurt as much as action, and reactions will abound. If they do not care, then it might be back to haunt them.
Inter-linked.A*Star gets its glamour factor from EDB's past track record of igniting FDI into Singapore.Originally posted by NuLife:i meant Astar progress not Edb....betw...;p
Now I'm confused. Isn't Philip Yeo the EDB chief? What's A*Star got to do with him, unless he has been reassigned. Anyway, EDB itself has been rebranded Spring Singapore or something like that.Originally posted by NuLife:i meant Astar progress not Edb....betw...;p
Ehmz....media is trying to portray him in the good image....dun you get it?Originally posted by NuLife:i think so too... i was reading the articles in details and
it seemd lik he is passionate abt improving the system...
just that he got carried away...
one thing i wish to also pt out on the more females/forigener
making the grades for Astar scholars..
its perfectlt understandable....
1) female as scholars
I feel that the research field is more suitable for females
when they do not have alot of choices in the industry...
given the tender, less dynamic, and milder nature of females....
research field is more suitable...
whsereas hot blooded guys will have alot more chioces...
the more dynamic ones wil probably choose to go else where...
lik the private sectors... for more real world challenges....
than seating in the lab doin boring research for yrs....
2)foriegners as scholars...
if a sporean get a scholarship form another uni/country...
im sure he will be obedient as well....
jus like foriegn workers here....
infact i second the idea of giving more scholarships
to foriegners/women for research....
i personally feel its one area where we can tap into
better foriegn brains....
but philipe yeos responses did seemd like he is passionate
abt giving them to local guys.. but disppointed w them thou....
but this does not mean i agree w his words/actions...
And how do you know that it was due to EDB that we got better?Originally posted by bratpig:without EDB getting more foreign investment, you would most prob be sweeping the floor and eating shat now

And we have to sit back and let her lack of intellect and empathy warm our hearts?Ooooh..I feel so warm and cuddled.Originally posted by snow leopard:just want to answer the question the scholar girl had. she couldn't understand why her male contemporaries talk about NS all the time.
NS is a significant milestone in the lives of the average singapore guy. it is a life changing experience very different from school. there's a lot of fear and apprehension because overnight, you lost liberty and freedom. yet at the same time, you found comradeship and brotherhood that keeps you going through the pain and suffering. don't you watch war movies? the intensity of shared lives can be very strong.
having said that, 10 years down the road, these events will be overtaken by other events and topics will change. your male friends will talk about other things like careers, relationships, families, kids ...
If there was a better economic board which re-distributed the profit better to the people, instead of almost 99% to govt. coffers, then people wouldn't be struggling right now to make ends meet- just to survive.Originally posted by bratpig:without EDB getting more foreign investment, you would most prob be sweeping the floor and eating shat now
