I grew up speaking English in my household and I expect people to respect that.
I speak Hokkien better than Mandarin because this is the language I communicate to my grandparents and relatives in, as well as English.Hokkien is my mother tongue, the language of my ancestors.
I understand Malay and can speak pidgin Malay because of my Borneo side of the family tree.
I am proud of my roots, and my cuisine is a mix of three worlds.
I am Singaporean, of the Malay Archipelago, and a Christian.I live in a country where you can see African Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Caucasian, Indian, Malays , all eating in a food court in peace and harmony.
I will not stand for China attempting to foist her North Asian brand of cultural hegemony on our island.
Let them see it however they will.Balls to them if they deem us inferior.I am not 100% ethnic Han or Mongolian, and I have nothing that connects us to them besides some parts of my blood in a genetic fashion. -

Singaporean chinese have always been well regarded as an example for mainland chinese to emulate ever since they opened up their economy. Deng Xiao Peng even openly mentioned Singapore as a model for chinese cities when he visited southern China. Chinese civil servants came to singapore to learn, parents sent their children here to study and many came here to work (hence the problem we have on FT) Who says they regard us as babarian???
Besides, Singaporean chinese, whether pure or mixed, are happy and proud of who we are working together as a country. We don't need to compare ourselves with any other people to be proud.

peranakans their names are somewhat different from chinese. also, most peranakans originate from malaysia, maybe those whose grand parents are born in malaysian are more peranakan than those who are from china?

Most Chinese may have left china a poor man but many succeeded one way or another in south east asia. That is the reason why ethnic chinese minority remain significant players in the economies of most, if not all south east asian countries today. Most chinese would go back to china to get marred then returned here. They din marry the "low caste locals."
If you don't have the book and you think you are peranakan, so be it, but don say your ancestors are poor chinese married to "low caste locals". You insult your ancestors and all peranakans.
If you don't know your ancestor, or don't follow the family middle name, ask your parents, only they can tell. don't make sweeping statement here about chinese or peranakan. What you have said so far do not honor your ancestors.
Are you sure your ancestors are farmers from China, not a japanese soldier taking a chinese name, married a "low caste locals" to avoid trial after WW2? -
I am willing to face the fact that most of us are not 'pure Chinese', me included. i note many here just cannot accept it. They claim to be pure-breed. If one were to search for the truth, eg can provide evidence that all 8 of your grand parents came direct from China......otherwise, give truth a chance.
If we were to accept the fact that we have Malay blood, then we will learn to treat the minorities in our midst with more respect.......afterall, we also are part-malay.....
All I am asking is that people don't accept but test for the truth. Thank you. -
