Crazy Horse Paris cabaret to open Singapore version in December
SINGAPORE : After deciding to allow casinos, Singapore will become the first Asian city to host the world-famous Crazy Horse Paris cabaret in a move to further boost tourism, a local entertainment firm said Wednesday.
The show, featuring scantily-clad dancers in a passionate mix of dance, music and spectacular light effects, will open in December in the city-state's riverside entertainment district Clarke Quay, Eng Wah Organization said in a statement.
Eng Wah managing director Goh Min Yen said Singapore, where tourism is a major revenue earner, won over other Asian cities for the right to open the Crazy Horse Paris cabaret.
Goh said the show was expected to boost travel arrivals in the city-state as it would "give visitors to Singapore more night time entertainment options and we hope this encourages them to extend their stay".
Eng Wah said it will develop the venue and promote the show, but creative control will stay with the Paris-based management so that the Singapore version can "remain pure to the artistic reputation of the brand".
Didier Bernardin, the son of the Crazy Horse founder, said they chose Singapore because it was a "gateway" to Asia.
"We are beginning castings for the Singapore show now and recruiting dancers from Europe -- mainly from France -- and Asia," said Bernardin, who travelled here for the announcement.
Crazy Horse has been entertaining the public in Paris for more than 50 years. A sister show opened in Las Vegas in 2001.
Singapore, a tiny island-nation which boasts no natural wonders, has been taking steps to sharpen its attractiveness as a travel destination by building man-made attractions to augment its reputation for efficiency, cleanliness and safety.
The government last month said it would build two casino resorts by 2009 to spice up its staid image and boost its share of Asia's growing travel industry. - AFP /ct
