For example : LIU, or Lau
This surname if from the Han Dynasty royal family
Example 2 : LIN or Lim
This surname probably stated that the ancestors came from the forest.....no offence meant.
Example 3 : Hwang or Wong
This surname originated from the Chiang Hsia district. It was confered to a clan which helped the king in his battles in the Chou Dynasty. Sort of a battle medal...... -

I think the Tang Dynasty emperor belonged to the LI (Lee) surname-clan.
Tang Royal Founder was Li-Shih Ming (?).........perhaps history chaps can help.... -
Li Yuan, or Tang Gaozu, was the founding emperor of the Tang Dynasty, but it was his second son Li Shimin who unified the Central Plains or China and brought stability to the country in the early years of the Dynasty. During the Palace Coup at Xuanwu Gate, he killed his elder brother Crown Prince Li Jiancheng, forced his father to abdicate, and ascended the throne to become Tang Taizong.
The surname Li's origin could be traced far back to the Warring States period when Lao-tzu founded Taoism. Lao-tzu's given name was Li Er. -

Such information could be found in genealogy books on the list of the most common 100 Chinese surnames, or , compiled during the Song Dynasty. According to the books, there are multiple origins for most of the surnames. For the sake of simplicity, I have only quoted one of the earliest for the surnames of Li and Tang ("Tang" as in Hanyu Pinyin, not "Tang" as in dialect name), and would do likewise here.
For the surname Chen, one of the earliest origins could be traced to the Gui family -- descendants of China's legendary emperor Shun -- who defected to the state of Zhou during the tumultuous Shang Dynasty. When King Wu (Zhou Wuwang) overthrew the tyrant King Zhou (Shang Zhouwang), he bestowed the state of Chen to potter Gui who had served his father King Wen (Zhou Wenwang). During war in the Spring and Autumn Period, one of the nobles' sons fled to the state of Qi and adopted the surname of Chen. -

For the surname of Hong with the water radical in the character, it is believed the surname came about during the Western Zhou era (before the Spring and Autumn period) when descendants of the Gong clan, while fleeing persecution from enemies, added the water radical to their surname to conceal their true identities.

Qin (Ch'in) was the name of the dynasty founded by Shih Huang-ti or Qin Shihuang. Shih's surname was Ying, which hails from a family bloodline of a noble who served the legendary emperor Shun. The noble had helped Yu the Great control the floods that were ravaging the land at that time, and Shun bestowed him the surname of Ying. When the Qin Dynasty was overthrown after Shih's death, the royal family descendants changed their surname to Qin.

During the Shang Dynasty, there was a honest official Bi Gan who served the tyrant King Zhou (Shang Zhouwang) faithfully. Countless times he advised his cruel king to change his ways and rule with benevolence. For his efforts, Zhou had Bi Gan's heart dug out to entertain his concubines. Upon learning her husband's fate, Bi Gan's pregnant widow fled and sought refuge in the deep forests. After Zhou was deposed, new King Wu (Zhou Wuwang) sought out the widow and bestowed the surname of Lin to the newborn child in honour of Bi Gan. -
One of the earliest origins of the surname Cai is in Shu Du, the fifth son of King Wen (Zhou Wenwang). After overthrowing the Shang Dynasty, King Wu (Zhou Wuwang) bestowed the state of Cai to Shu Du. During the Spring and Autumn period, Cai was conquered by the state of Chu and Shu Du's descendants adopted the surname of Cai.

Liang was the name of the state bestowed to the son of General Qin Zhong by King Ping (Zhou Pingwang) in the early years of the Spring and Autumn period. Qin Zhong had earlier earned credit and fame waging successful war campaigns for Ping. Later when Liang was annexed by the powerful state of Qin, the descendants of the general's clan adopted the surname of Liang.

The surname Xu with the water radical hails from the Jiang (character representing ginger) clan, a major clan of powerful families in the Shang Dynasty. The clan claimed to have descended from Shennong ("Divine Farmer" ), also known as the Yan Emperor, a legendary emperor in Chinese mythology. Shennong was much revered because he taught people the practices of agriculture, which was at that time a highly-regarded aspect of the society. When the Jiang clan helped King Wu (Zhou Wuwang) overthrow the Shang Dynasty, Wu rewarded them with the fertile state of Xu. After Xu was conquered by the state of Chu during the Warring States period, descendants of the Jiang clan changed their surname to Xu.
