Do China have some sort of inferiority complex or something... and then keep aspiring to be a superpower.

They are tired to be pulled by the nose all these years. It's a matter a time they do become the world's most powerful Superpower. Give them 50 years (or less) they will eventually catch up with the States liao. I was extremely astonished and amazed at the rate of their modernization when I visited the 3 major cities of Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen. The only thing I cannot foresee nor imagine them improving is their people's own character. Taking a cab in these cities is always a nerve wreaking experience... It seems as if there is absolutely no order in their traffic system yet surprisingly they don't end up with accidents... One of my customer once told me that USA is strictly speaking, not the best free market in the world. This title should be given to China instead because they have zero regards for Intellectual Property. My supplier in SZ told me that only with no regards to IP will people keep coming out with fresh ideas on how to offer better products for the market and encourage entrepreneurship which IMHO, we Singapore have a lot to learn from them in this aspect if we want to remain competitive. I am not preaching that we should not protect IP but rather we did such a good job that we become accustomed to the protective environment that it created. It explains very much of the complacency in the lifestyle that we are leading. Now then the government call for entrepreneurship, though never too late to implement, but I guess we missed the boat already... -

When LHL recently visited Japan and told off Koizumi, it was Japanese right-wingers who demonstrated at the Spore embassy. It was reported that some demonstrators, in ignorance, called on Lee Kuan Yew to go home!!
There was no report of any demonstration in China against the visit. -

Chinese used to be cultured. This, however, has been all wiped out during in the cultural revolutions years. The current are the $$ generation... where the power/status/hapiness watever lies with those with $$$. This opinion prevail becos of the impact of corrupt officials during the start when the country opens up.
So it may take a while before they acquired back the correct cultural roots. -

in additional to the Class A war criminals. there shrine is also the spiritual resting place of millions of Japanese soldiers who died in war.
Japan fought a war of invasion and occupation in WW2 but in the later part of the war, many japanese died while protecting their homeland... including kamikaze pilots who never returned from their sucide mission.
I am not trying to be pro-Japanese... but there are always 2 side of the coin....
also the Jap always felt that they had "paid" for the "misdeeds" by the two atomic bombs that they have to endure.... -

You'd also need to think about giving up your Japanese car, tv, discman, playstation, watch, etc. and pay much more for those made in Europe or America. If you work in a Japanese company, you may also wanna think about quitting your job and applying to companies run by others. In any case, if ppl boycott Japanese goods as you suggest, Japanese companies may have to downsize or close and you may well be out of a job.
So, my friend, think harder.

Who would want to buy continental cars at a premium higher than jap cars when u get reasonable quality products from the japs??? 80% of the companies on Jurong Island are Japanese companies. If they pull out of Singapore, the supporting industries of instrumentation (mainly western vendors like Emerson, E+H etc and supporting local subcontractors on the Island) will also collapse. Thus, effectively the petrochem industry of Singapore will be destroyed. Additionally, if the petrochem industries titantic, without adequate support from the Petrochem industries for raw materials, the Semicon industries will also get dragged down as they have to purchase their materials from overseas thus higher cost. Firstly, one needs to understand the reasons for the strong Chinese and Korean feelings regarding Koizumi's visits to the Yasukuni shrine. Such visits are likened to Gerhard Shroeder enshrining and visiting the Berlin bunker where Hitler killed himself. If that were to happen, there will be huge demonstrations all over Europe and America with ppl calling for Shroeder to immediately resign.
As regards your point that there are other ppl enshrined at Yasukuni, the principal objection as I understand, is against the 14 class A war criminals. What is needed is frank discussion between the Chinese, Korean and Japanese govt. to look for ways forward; eg relocate the 14 war criminals somewhere where Japanese leaders don't visit. Trust you can now understand the reason. -
Actually, looking from the jap's pov, they are probably pissed off that we are interfering in their own affairs. Who are we to tell them not to visit the shrine? They feel that they're minding their own business and probably expect us to do the same.
Being the hardcore conspircy theorist that I am, I'm compelled to speculate that perhaps the local leedership wants to ensure that china and jap will always have a bone to pick with each other and therefore constantly check each other's growth...

Why not try visiting http://www.yasukuni.or.jp/english/, analysis what it says about Japan's "noble souls" and then revert back to historical FACTS of Japan's conduct in WW2.

Hi, I guess i was being ambiguous. I agree that jap has conducted many atrocities and war crimes. I am not condoning their crimes and their insistance of their innocence nor the priggish arrogance of their righteousness regarding the war.
Perhaps their indignation regarding the shrine issue is not so much the correctness of visiting the shrine and its significance, but rather the fact that foreigners like China and Sg are telling them what to do.
To illustrate my point, would you get upset if I told you not to go to a certain place as i felt it is wrong IN MY OPINION, even though you feel that its none of my business IN YOUR OPINION. Perception comes into play in this affair.
When discussing this issue, one must bear in mind the possibly that the jap prime minister might have been subjected to the same education that denied the occurance of the atrocities. Of course ignorance is no excuse (although the jap prime minister would beg to differ). -
