Hall of Residence in NUS unfair

There are a few halls of residence in NUS that are supposed to be run separately from NUS adminstration. (of course that's a rather vague term).
Raffles Hall is one of them. They impose compulsory meal plans on students, and if students opt to go without meal plans, they still need to pay 60% of the amount for meals. (eg compulsory meal plan = $200 a month, if you forgot this, you still have to pay them $120 ANYWAY).
That's not all. They force you to buy their Raffles Hall t-shirt. They make you pay, then they claim that they have run of t-shirts, and they can't give you one. And since "the fund has closed", they can't refund you the money either.
What can you do? It's like an unwritten rule that if you b itch about it, they'd try and catch you doing things that are deemed to be against the hall rules. So if you keep quiet about the t shirt money (a sizeable $12), they'll let it go.
Isn't that akin to protection money???
In another hall, King Edward VII, it seems the security guard has some kind of quota to reach to catch people breaking the rules (and of course, getting subsequently fined). He therefore pounces on any group of people which consists of more than 2 people and tells them to shut up even though they are merely talking.
What the Fuck is all of this about??? -

That is why it is recommended to move into prince george park instead. You pay a bit more but you endure less of the crap

They just keep spying on you and breathing down your neck. He apparently put his ear on some girl's door to spy and her and totally freaked her out. In UK, nothing cares about students sleeping together....just as long as they keep the noise down.

The same mentality as the inane folks who complain to the media that their holy angels are viewing sggirls.
And frankly speaking,the security guard has overstepped his boundary in trying to spy on the girl.I would have called the cops straightaway if I knew he had done this a lot of times. -
REGARDING MEALS
Maybe I can understand this....
The Halls have already built their dining rooms to hold hundreds of people at a time and have employed staff to work in them. If all hostelites opted out of meals, these dining facilities would become redundant and become a financial loss. So they obviously priced it in such a way to discourage the opting out of meals. As long as this condition is made known to potential hostelites before they accept their places in the halls, it can be considered to be fair enough.
Its just like the mobile phone service providers telling you:
- Buy a handphone for this price, with a 2-year contract.
- If you don't want the contract, you have to pay a surcharge for the phone.
REGARDING T-SHIRTS
If what you wrote was right, then it does seem like an unfair practice.
REGARDING SECURITY GUARDS
They must have beefed up security and discipline there. I stayed 3 years in KE7 a long time ago and we never had security guards back then. There were always the rule that after a certain time, guys and girls couldn't be in the same room with the door closed....but its enforcement was close to zero. Actually, it WAS zero. Heck, we're talking about undergrads and postgrads here (ie. educated adults).
However, if there was such a rule and the guy did visit the girl with the door closed, then they have clearly broken the rule. Then it will depend on how high-handed the staff-in-charge is. And from personal experience with staff, many unfortunately are.....
CAUTION
One thing we have to be careful about.....from my personal experience, there are many rumours that we hear especially regarding hostels. Some are true, many are not. -
nobody asked you to go to NUS, you could have gone to other universities, you only have yourself to blame

Me thinks you should just go rent a room at clementi. I know its a little costly and got to travel more, but you would have no rules to adhere to. Basically, you're buying yourself more freedom; of course still got to depend on the tenant but I'm sure it's easy to find an accomadating one these days given the market situation. Any agents here? Maybe they can enlighten us on the rates.

got 1 sercurity guard got caught on video for sniffing a hostelite's panties in the middle of the nite...
even worse rite...

honestly.... sounds like the management do not take you all as mature adults when staying in hostels....... sounds like they have baby sitters to look after you all small kids....... sad story.....
