Dr Albert Winsemius' view about public economics won't work in the modern era anymore. While families can get away with fortunes earned from politics and business tie-ups in the 2nd half of the 20th century, the shift is now on transparent business policies, an open political scene, accountability and free trade.
Those who follow the old model will inevitably collapse as time passes while those who adopt the new form of open management with transparency and accountability are those who will benefit from it.
Singapore has to shift from that old model- but as long as LKY isn't around, we don't have a hope. That old fart is still insistent that his economic policies are good- well, at his age, I expected him to be senile anyway. -

There are many intangibles that have been completely destroyed by PAP Government over the years. Take culture for example, there is hardly any emphasis and promotion of it. On the contrary, they are seriously telling us to speak only pure English. Why should we do that?
Singlish is part and parcel of Singapore culture, and those elites up there are telling us to drop it! How dare they even suggest such a stupid thing!
All PAP government talk about today is investments - make money, money and more money. Its ok if they do that - but only if it makes our lives easier and rising cost of living is being checked or lowered. It has not!
So you see, this dictator of ours was cunning enough to fool us about his seemingly good intentions at the beginning. Sad to say, we all know over the years, he never meant well for all of us. He is doing all this for his own glory.

Putting this aside,from a historical perspective,the system that once worked well might not worked after some time,due to a change in the environment or that the system corrupts under its weight.
Worse still people find it hard to adopt and still stick to the 'good old system' despite signs that it is failing,very great example perhaps is the Ottoman Empire.......

Actually talents and leaderships are acceptable commodity of nation building that could have brought about great accomplishments beyond imaginations of men. People could have died for selfless leaderships and talents.

Do the elites who are so eminently qualified really care for or accept feedbacks or are they too afraid to lose face.
I notice that no actions seem to have been taken to date to solve the problems relating to high costs of living and doing business in Singapore?
Without solving these two problems, how can the government expect the citizens to be competitive or even to live on?
Why are the elite ministers not accepting responsibility for inefficiencies, fiascos or major failures like highway collapses or security lapse (Huang Na case) major disasters or non-implementation of major policies announced by PM ?
Why take so long to improve service level and reduce costs at town council, transport or utility companies and what have been done to solve the "20 problems of autocracy" as posted earlier in this forum?
What will be done to rescue the hundreds of thousand of citizens suffering from mortgage debts due to bursting of the asset enhancement bubble as a result of excessive double taxation by HDB on housing prices beyond the reach of average Singaporeans ?
Will there be accountability on failures in projects like the growth triangle, micropolis, cao, souzhou, resorts projects, hawpaw villas and all the supposed business hubs and who will account for the great losses sufferred on all these and all the investment losses on taxpayers' monies?
Surely there ought to be some forms of reports to the citizens on losses or failed projects to show results of performance.
Will there be accountable process management by government ministers to upgrade the civil service coordination and knowledge application.
Will there be real actions and results from result-oriented ministers like Goh Keng Swee of Hon Sui Sen for a change to save jobs and sustain our wealth with real actions instead of resorting to giving all kinds of preemptive or lame excuses always given by the later scholarly ministers who seems to care for only image on the media. -

well the last I heard from a couple of the MIW was that we are the reason for our own situation and should never look to the government for any handouts - ir shift the blame. I wondered about all the housing debt and stress and high cost of living we are now having to put up.. I suppose that MIW will come tell us that we are all hallucinating. Upon rare times when I watch parliment - Lee was saying our cost of living was lower and he compared to the base year 98 (It was the peak of the boom period) and based on that, said that our cost of living has instead gone down (he was so happy to announce that - but I guess he thinks no one understand economics).
Besides, what's the point of telling anyone. Its not as if they understand or will do anything. Its not their pockets that is hurting or that their daily lives are hard. For example, we cram into MRTs everyday, pay so much more and still service suck, plus no improvements at all for all that increases in costs to everything we had been hammer with. But to MIW, earning5 digit figures, driving in big cars. 2-3 cents increase is til them nothing but its something to those who make 1K and having to take public transport. Here's an analogy: Bush had reading skills issues. when it hit home, then he started a foundation to help people who had trouble reading. But he's not an iraqi suffering the current terrible life or the life during the wars. So its easy to order a shoot and kill or the people ove there. Its easy, he will not have to live through the loss nor suffer the consequence of his own actions. Sama sama.
The fact that going to the system we might be charged more. For example the last fiasco about public healthcare bills/services compared to private... Well some MIW commented we are not communist and should not force public healthcare to lower their price just because some private healthcare is able to provide better and cheaper healthcare... Well.. that sums it all up. -

THE CITIZENS OF SINGAPORE ARE PAYING THEIR SALARIES!
When a person receives salary he serves the paymaster, which happen to be us citizens.
PAP ministers are mostly referrring to us Singaporeans (especiallly the non elites) like we are beggars. Often we have been chided like this - "there is no such thing as a free lunch.."
We do not seek charity moneys - we just want the Government to improve the ciitzens' nett asset worth and liquidity.
We used to think it was worth doing NS because we have personal stakes in our country, HDB e.g. How wrong we were - now everyone realises HDB factually belongs to the Government, we are just renting the apartments in the name of 'ownership'. The Government owns almost anything and everything that makes money in Singapaore. We dont seem to have any share of their wealth. How else this present high cost of living?
Do we owe the ministers a living? NO!
Do the ministers owe us a living? YES!
Ministers should not imagine themselves to be lords and we the servants. Without our tax moneys and limitless CPF resources available to them, PAP could not have performed any economic miracles. -

I also have disagreements with the government about some of the policies they make. I don't like the education system, the way companies in Singapore judge and employ people. I don't like the retirement age and the ERP. But I respect the government because I know no one is perfect. The government is human after all. LKY is human after all. They have put their lives, names and reputation for the sake of our country.
I dont know how you guys can compare Mahathir with LKY. Some of the sentiments even portray that you people would rather have Mahathir governing Singapore instead of LKY.
As i recall there was a previous post that said that the country is where is it because Singaporeans and not because of LKY. True. However you neglected the fact that LKY is Singaporean as well. I'm sure in the past, he urged our grandparents and parents to work with him to build up the country. Have you seen the video in which he cried for our country. That is how much he cares. He has stayed on so long because like a parent, you always worry, even if you know your child has grown up. My grandparents still constantly nag my mother to drink lots of water and sleep early. Thats how it is.
Imagine. Just imagine that your grandfather has laboured throughout his life to provide your parents with a good life. Then when you were born, your friends disagree with what your grandfather is doing, started calling him names like 'old fart', 'communist dictator' and even want to throw a party for you to celebrate his passing. How would you feel?
To me, LKY is like my grandfather, although I don't agree with some of the things he does, I will still love and respect my grandfather. I hope that LKY doesnt know about sgforums, because he will be shedding tears once more.
