He will become the next Mao or Kim Il Sung if he is not around. Building a maseolum for him to display his body for us to pay respect to him. Building statues everywhere in Singapore and also potraits in every government offices, schools and many more. A song on him also and his "famous" words and pharses of him displaying on the roads, streets with billboard and sketches on him using it as propaganda to influence us or maybe even foreigners

My mom as a kid had to see the landlady's face colour, exactly like what we see on TV or movie. Apartments and houses were just impossible and too expensive for most commoners to own. -
Doesn't mean we'll still be part of Malaysia without LKY. We could have remained with London until 2003 and joined Malaysia or declared independence outright. Had we remained longer with the British, human rights in Singapore wouldn't be in such a sorry state. The Government will pass legislations to take over land from private ownership, and pay compensation at about ONE-TENTH of the Open Market Value.
After "selling" the land to HDB at a supposedly "subsidised" price (which is more then 100 times the amount paid as compensation), the HDB flats are then built on this land.
HDB should be enjoying a huge economy of scale in the HDB flat building program, yet the HDB flats are sold at a price that is far higher then a similar size unit of private homes built in Malaysia - with land prices based on commercial values at no subsidised costings, nor the building program having the economies of scale similar to HDB; (and without considering the difference in the exchange rates) .
Someone will argue that land is plentiful and cheap in Malaysia, however, HDB flats are build on land that have been taken over at a fraction of the open market valuation of land in Singapore.
The value of land sold in Singapore is generally influenced by the Government, through URA's periodical release of land parcels for sale to the public and private sectors.
Land prices have reached astronomical proportions, to the extent that for the prices to climb down to more realistic values, it will undermine the bank loans of previous mortgages, and will affect the general accounting valuations of all assets of individuals and corporations in Singapore.
So the "wonderful lie of a castle in the sky" is perpetuated, till another economic crisis comes along, and the banks will panic over the artificially high values of homes in Singapore.
If HDB is building and selling homes at a cheap price, one only need to see their annual report to note the substantial revenues and CASH reserves - with excess and unused cash being returned to the Government Treasury, and making its way to the GIC and Temasek Holdings for their overseas financial adventures in multi-billion dollar investments. -

In 1997, the brits took out whatever money they could when they left, leaving the ppl to the communists, where was the right of those who could not migrate to canada or oz?
In 1971 when the great britain empiry declared moving out of east of suez canal, they would have left singapore to malaysia, no need to wait for 2003. Thousands who were left jobless would have to be taken care by the malaysia. Would we have the human rights under malaysia?
If CSJ fought and won the independence for singapore, then he would be respected, but if he were appointed by the outgoing british master, then he remains a stooge. would he be elected as a prime minister? would you vote for him?

The government was changed from appointed to legislature only in 1995, prior to handing the colony back to china, for 148 years out of 150 years, the government of Hong Kong was appointed by the queen thousands of miles away.
The right of independence is the basic human right. There is no difference between appointment of junior KIm by his father in North Korea and that of Chris Patten by the queen of england, in both cases, the people of norht korea and hong kong had no choice in saying what type of government they want. -
Hong Kong and Malaya/Singapore are different stories. Britain forced China to give up Hong Kong for 99 years at the point of a gun. Whereas in Malaya/Singapore, the Malay rulers willingly gave up their traditional authority to the British Residents. Of course, the Pangkor Engagement was open to interpretation, and some descendants of the Perak royalty claimed the Sultan had been fooled. It was only after the Japs started stirring $hit that hatred for the West took root. But then again, Japan was worse. It was on par with Germany, who kept the old European powers occupied back home and allowed the Japs a free hand in Asia.
