Does anybody have any idea why NKF now set up a Cancer Fund???
It's gahmen who wants this, cuz NKF too much money in bank. But after yesterday's show, NKF is even richer than before....hahhaha -
Why can't SPCA use these money to build more space for these poor animals? It seem that they like to use this needle often... NKF Cancer Show 1 raises over S$5m from nearly 900,000 calls

Over S$5 million (S$5, 035,172) have been raised so far in the first part of the NKF Cancer Show on Channel U on Sunday evening.
For the show, MediaCorp Artistes Bryan Wong and Kym Ng played dress-up in paper while some of their counterparts danced and sang.
Some artistes also shared touching stories of friends who died from cancer, all in the name of charity for the NKF Cancer Fund.

NKF exploits cancer and kidney disease patients by wheeling them out in public like circus performing animals, or using them in their money soliciting campaigns, like the junk mail I've been getting. Filming can be very tiring even to experienced actors and actresses. Is it going to be too taxing for the cancer patients to talk and cry in front of the cameras? After all, these ppl who are struck by fatal illnesses like cancer need a lot of rest.
And if you notice... they always like to bring their patients to the live shows. Are these patients well enough to sit there for two hours watching the song and dance performances (sometimes dangerous stunts)??
In my opinion, I think it's even more cruel to tax on these patients just to beg for more donations, than us not donating at all.
And I'm still wondering: what the hell does the national KIDNEY foundation have to do with cancer, esp since there is already a cancer society? wtf? -

What kind of results has the real mission - eradicating kidney disease
of NKF delivered? More than less diseased people.
To NKF, treatment, not prevention is truly better than cure. There are cheap ways to detect, prevent and treat kidney disease before it becomes full blown. Why is NKF dragging its feet on it?
If NKF seriously channel resources into preventive and restoration than fund accumulation measures, I'm sure we would have seen a sharp decline of diseased people
year after year.

However, these programmes are expensive and unless people wish to go volunteer and put up their time to visit the schools and teach kids about animals and etc. Its not going to happen very fast. Besides, parents think nothing of buying pets for their irresponsible kids. And do not stop kids from beating up animals or even killing them. Then no matter what SPCA does for an hour of training, parents spend more time "teaching" their kids by the bad example they set.
BTW. SPCA is organizing Animal Day at Parco Bugis Junction on 7-9 Oct (Fri - Sun) 2005. They need your help to :
1. Man Stall
2. Face/Hand Paint Ballon Sculpture
3. Design Posters/Badge making
4. Emcee or Perform on Stage
5. Think of anything else to add interest to the event
The run in 3 shifts:
1st shift : 11 - 2 pm
2nd shift : 2 - 6 pm
3rd shift: 6 - 9 pm

could have been expended on organ purchase and replacement for
most (if not all) of the current kidney dialysis patients.
With a new kidney, there's no need for expensive recurring dialysis
patient costs.
What a rip-off!!!

euthanasia is mainly for comatose patients, not cancer as there is still a chance for survival. -
I have heard (not confrimed source) that in order to qualify for NKF subsidies..a household cannot have income above 2k!
Look around us...how many will not make it liaoz....
Seriosly... i would rather give directly to the needy and not through an Organisation like NKF... -
Depends on stage. 3rd stage is usually terminal However, some people still try and try and get frustrated at the end. -
This is a very common criteria to qualify for subsidies by the government or VWOs. Problem being, $2 - 3k for household income is like barely enough these days! Say you have 2 kids, elderly parents, a housing loan, a car loan, how much disposable income will you have left after subtracting all that? And prices keep going up in Singapore! Actually the problem about kidney failure is also related to liver failure and the basis of it is actually your diet.
Basically if u have a healthy diet(eat lean red meats, fish(salmon, tuna etc), certain seafoods and lots of veggies and fruits, your chances of liver and kidney failure is reduced because your body produces less free radicals.
Free radicals are dangerous to the function of the organs in the body because it attacks the organs itself. It's produced in the midst of producing energy from food and in order to make sure that the amount is reduced, organs like the kidney and the liver will process it to reduce the amounts.
But even these organs are no robots and can fail if they are used excessively.
That's why people who have had drank loads of alcohol and ate a lot of unhealthy foods tend to have kidney and/or liver failure. So if we want to reduce the kidney failure rate of Singaporeans, then its time we start addressing the problem of diets in each and every Singaporean.
Once a majority of Singaporeans, young and old, start eating more healthly(and moderate their amount of unhealthy food) then maybe we don't need to continously throw money at huge money guzzling organizations like NKF. -

Better save the money for yourself cos Medisave already increased.
Very hard to qualify for NKF fund if u have cancer cos household income must not be more than $3K (1 think). They will tell u to tap your children's Medisave if u have exhausted your own.
Also why do they spend money on advertisements telling pple to go for cancer screening? The money saved can be used to give free/subsidized pap smear & mammogram for pple over 50.
By the way, who pays for foreign artistes to fly over to perform?
A lot of money spend on their accommodation, air tickets + performance fees.
NKF should give chance to smaller, little known charities who don't have budget to advertise on tv. Already we have contributed to their kidney, children's fund + now cancer. -

Dialysis was and still is the favorite treatment for kidney patients namely because the waiting list for spare kidneys is so long. Unless you can come up with a super duper way to ensure our capacity of kidneys available for transplant increase, i don't see how your idea is practical.

You don't expect people to sell kidneys, caus first and foremost it's illegal.
And it stinks of exploitation.
Kidneys can be harvested using pioneering stemcell research, but than again, that's years from completion and many countries are imposing curtails on stemcell research.
So tell me, what's your idea for making kidneys widely available as you claim possible? -

he was in his late 50s to 60s, unemployed and not in contact with his children, but still, he has to come up with a few hundreds every few months to pay for his share of dialysis. his other friends at the dialysis center, those with children earning below average income (doing odd jobs etc) have to come up with about $1k+ every few months.. this is a lot of $$ to them!
these people may be praising NKF on screen but that is definitely NOT reality. -

I can still remember how NKF donation cards were forced onto us when I was a student. I can't remember clearly, but the cards stated that we had to collect 'a minimum amount' - $10, I think... I can't remember. When we asked our teachers what would happen if we failed to get this 'minimum amount', they said that the school would get into trouble with NKF.
Then we, the students, would in turn get into trouble with the school.
What the ****.... We get into trouble for not 'giving enough' to charity? For goodness' sake - if every student in SG gets the same donation card, who the heck are they gonna solicit donations from?!?!?! Our parents!?!?! Not every kid in town is loaded, alright!?!? I myself had to skip meals sometimes just to buy lecture notes!!!
We were all so pissed off that we just gave this 'minimum amount' and washed our hands off the matter.
It sucks that I'm thinking badly of a charitable organization which has indeed done some good - but the way I see it, NKF has a lot to answer for.
