IMHO, in SGP context, there is no need for subtle power for ppl to be submissive.Originally posted by dryver:your boss asks you to do him a personal favour. you don't want to,but you oblige because you are afraid that he may get back at you, at work. And when he does it through work, there's no way that you can prove that he is aiming at you. furthermore, he can come up with a thousand and one reasons to not promote you.
subtle power exists because we cannot account for everything that happens there's no check available or made possible.
do you think there's a lot of this in our singaporean political circle?
Didn't apply to me when I was employed. Boss ask me to send him back as his car was in the service ctr. Told him cannot as I am going different ways, after that got him a taxi instead. I still got promoted...Originally posted by dryver:your boss asks you to do him a personal favour. you don't want to,but you oblige because you are afraid that he may get back at you, at work. If a boss establishes a strong management or corporate culture with himself setting as an example to his staff towards attaining teamwork, accountable and transparent corporate governance, the kind of problem you mentioned, i.e. pickiness or office politics need not arise.Originally posted by dryver:your boss asks you to do him a personal favour. you don't want to,but you oblige because you are afraid that he may get back at you, at work. what does IMHO stand for?Originally posted by diggo:IMHO, in SGP context, there is no need for subtle power for ppl to be submissive.
why do you think is there little or no transparency in the government??? robertteh?Originally posted by robertteh:If a boss establishes a strong management or corporate culture with himself setting as an example to his staff towards attaining teamwork, accountable and transparent corporate governance, the kind of problem you mentioned, i.e. pickiness or office politics need not arise.
When a good corporate culture is established all the staff will know what to do and not be afraid of offending bosses, doing things stupid like currying favors or joining in bosses' subtle abuse of power.
When the boss finally establishes his good corporate culture, even if he asks for something due to exigencies or exceptions, staff will understand and support him.
In Singapore, the office set-ups are usually boss-centred, because bosses generally influenced by the whole political system practise bullying, use a lot of sheet power instead of etablishing proper excellence corporate governance, teamwork, accountablity and motivation to get things done.
Our bosses have not acquired the good corporate governance and will continue to be self-centred and make all the decisions and staff have to take orders all the time and not be part of the achievements being subjected to abuses of all kinds.
Citizens see and copy all the power system - big eats small and small quarrels about petty things among themselves. The bosses will want to make all the decisions in selecting contractors, purchases, recruitments of people, grassroots, community or audit committee members, public-fund investments and basis of charging citizens on lands and all the high costs. There is no returns or savings passed back to lower the high costs.
This kind of working environment is in the fist place created by copying of a political culture. Take all if you can and insist on bullying to no end. It only finally leads to citizens switching off or voting with their feet - bo chap. How to get employees to work wholeheartedly for the bosses ?
Things and culture have to change drastically to get people to support and corporate governance should be aimed at to reach high standard instead of all the talking about presumed achievements, talents, leaderships ..which is to benefit only the leaders and not the ordinary people.
regarding my previous post. look at NKF. high profile case, no comments from the ministers.Originally posted by dryver:becos they have things to hide? afraid that their dominance will be eroded ? not clean?
How can the Ministers comment or pass judgment ?Originally posted by dryver:regarding my previous post. look at NKF. high profile case, no comments from the ministers.
lack of transparency is an enabler of covert/subtle power.Originally posted by dryver:your boss asks you to do him a personal favour. you don't want to,but you oblige because you are afraid that he may get back at you, at work.
