we didnt elect her... we elected her husband.. its her husband we gave our support and confidence... she is not a representative of ANYTHING, and a representative of NOBODY except herself...

Neither did we elect LHL. At least LKY fought tough election campaigns in the 60s and 70s.Originally posted by LazerLordz:Did we really elect him?![]()

not to be detracted over the key issue.. but the fact of the matter is.. he was elected... either by default or through electoral votes.Originally posted by LazerLordz:Did we really elect him?![]()
Well, thanks to the GRC system, democracy is all but dead in Singapore.Originally posted by tripwire:not to be detracted over the key issue.. but the fact of the matter is.. he was elected... either by default or through electoral votes.
its not his fault, if no opposition wanna stand against him... or if >>WE<< choose not to stand against him in his ward.
if you feel that democracy has failed when someone won by default.. then its not that the democracy has failed.. but we have failed democracy.
but then again.. i would vote for him if i got the chance.. so.. i cannot say i failed democracy.

Most GRCs are uncontested because it is not easy to find 4 or 5 peopel to fill the opposition slate. I have observed federal and state elections in other countries, and they either practice proportional representation (in which all parties with a certain percentage of popular votes are guaranteed seats in parliament) or preferential voting in single wards (in which people vote by marking numbers on their ballot slip). In the 2nd case, it allows us to choose the candidate we like very much, unlike the current system that produces a lot of blank votes. Not surprisingly, there are a significant number of independent MPs sworn into office.Originally posted by tripwire:to claim that GRC system leads to the death of democracy in singapore is belittleing those of us singaporeans who voted for or against the various parties under the GRC system... and the outcome of our decision .
i understand your desire... and i do support some of your position... but i feel that if our opposition cannot even find enough people (3 to 6 only!!) to stand against a single ward.. what's the point of having proportional representation??Originally posted by iveco:Most GRCs are uncontested because it is not easy to find 4 or 5 peopel to fill the opposition slate. Also, isn't the CDC mayor supposed to represent those in a particular district? Then why is he apppointed as the mayor, and not elected by local residents?I feel we need to have local elections for the CDC mayor, although it need not be compulsory.
True. In Australia, every seat (single-member ones) has a multiple-cornered fight. The people vote for their favourite candidate by numbering off the voting slip. To be valid, your voting slip must have the number "1" on it. It is not necessary to list all your choices. If I had the chance to vote (which my crush 6 years my junior does), I'd only list 3 choices.Originally posted by LazerLordz:The GRC system favours Leviathans.Huge lumbering beasts who can afford the huge numbers of members.
