The question is "Can Singapore collapse?" how can an answer "the sooner the better" be talking about "radical reform and remaking"???Originally posted by LazerLordz:It's more about radical reform and remaking he's talking about.
I don't know why you bring the same denseness to every thread in Speakers Corner.![]()
Is this the PM's national day message?Originally posted by archon1234:Singapore will stand proud.
But this will need all our effort and heart to do it. We need a strong team of leaders, fellow country men and good will people from overseas to share a common destiny. It would not be easy, but neither it is impossible.
We are going to stand proud and not slip into a chapter in history. Believe in yourself and you will make it true. It is our common good for singapore to grow and prosperous. There will be better place overseas, but it does not belongs to you.
We all definite need to review our way of doing things, our expectations, our demands and more importantly our young generations; will they be distorted by material wealth / religion extremism? will they stand together to face challenges like rise of china, terrorism, foreign worker issues?
We must take reference from USA, the country prosperous because they have a strong population base, annually replendish by immgratants (foreign talents) to US. They are inspired to join a dream, and a safe place for their young. For Singapore to success, we have to emulate the US model. At least it is successful in USA right.
But at the moment, it all gloomy here as the economy is undergoing restructuring. Our patience for RMB to revaluate finally paid off last week. Now we just need to wait for the next phase foe China Economy to take off, and transform from a investment vacuum sucking machine to a investment ATM for us. believe me, the chinese businessmen and richmen are really really rich and spending power beyond our imagination. more importantly, they are ready to spend $$$$$$$$$.
On short term, I think that singapore can bank on IR and Banking / Financial / Healthcare service to attract these rich people. But these will only be temp measurements, we need some big global local company like Shell in energy business, we hope to see some local company like Bell in telecoms. More importantly, Singapore need to explore the use of other methodologies to innovate the usage of space in the country. This will enable singapore to have a much great flexibility in building a strong high tech industrial base. R&D lab and design centres are not enough, we should have emulate the Taiwanese model for their semiconductor industrial.
Singapore is now at the cross road of her history. As we celebrate the 40th birthday, we face many tough challenges abroad and local as well. Our people should remain calm, as we know lot of our issue comes from the global economy. The strong country reserve and our country spirts are our best bid to unite all people in singapore, both singapore & foreigner, for a better future. We have to treat each other with respect and on equal ground.
Agreed fully, and wanna add one more point:Originally posted by gorby107:Singapore survival not only depends on the government but everybody as we need to be united if don't want Singapore to collapse
Yup I agree. I am now worried for some of the teenagers which are the same group as me as they don't care about the current affairs and just care about their own things which is quite worrying. If next time if they rule and take over the country what will Singapore become? I don't want to think too much about itOriginally posted by sg_aurora:Agreed fully, and wanna add one more point:
When Singapore is on the footpath to success, our grandfathers and fathers take any jobs that can feed their family. Distance and shifts have never been a concern.
Today, we have Singaporeans who are selective about jobs, distance, shifts work, dun want to get their hands dirty......
Each individual's success contributes to the success of Singapore...
Singapore's success will be the pride of each individual...
Unless we change our own mindset, we cannot expect the govt to do miracles...

Who say so....?
Getting hands dirty? Let me ask you, how much are these groups of people doing dirty job getting? Don't you agree that they are getting only [b]partial of peanut's shell. With high expenses and living cost to cope with, you think they do their work in hapiness? Put your shoes in their situation and ask yourself.
I myself working as a white collar. I fully understand these people.
To cut down my daily expenses; I took train for Bedok to Bishan and walk to Sin Ming Road and vice vesa when I finish work. My walking distance took me one hour for go to work and going home. So....you think we deserve this kind extreme thrifty way of livelihood; and where the High ranking officers of sg gov, GIC, GLC are enjoy swiss standard of living and laughing their way to the banks with their unreasonable super high salaries?
MM keeping saying paying top salaries for top people by comparing with the private sectors. I wonder if these mini-stars or the high ranking officers were to be put in private sectors, how many will be able make through.

What do you think? Wouldn't be surprised they have a charter flight specially for the elite to get out..Originally posted by Heartlander:No matter what happen, one thing is pretty worrying!IF Singapore are attacked by some neighbouring countries, will the rich just fly out of Singapore with their gold bars leaving the poor Singaporeans to fend for themselves?
times have changed.. nations are governed not by military power.. but economic interest. looking around us.. the SEA countries are all pushing their emphasis on economic progression trying to maintain their above 5% growth rate. to maintain this, they need FDI from the US and American MNCs. if any nation try to attack Singapore (which in the first place makes no economical sense), the sanctions they face from the UN will cause their economy to collapse. As long as no radicals gain power in our neighbouring countries.. we should be fine.Originally posted by Heartlander:No matter what happen, one thing is pretty worrying!IF Singapore are attacked by some neighbouring countries, will the rich just fly out of Singapore with their gold bars leaving the poor Singaporeans to fend for themselves?
