If Osama and the JI realises that our new $200m is just a white elephant, I still they'd just laugh their asses off and not bother too much about it.
Attacking the London underground twice had a purpose, so did the Egyptian bombing a few days ago and so was the WTC attack on 9/11 for Al-Qaeda. But attacking white elephants are way down in terms of their priority. Truly, I also think those terrorists should have better things to do than attack an expensive white elephant that serves little purpose. -

$200m for a building of tat scale and architecture is quite reasonable...
before a building has to be build, a series of feasibility studies had to be conducted... and these cost money...
and if im not wrong, our library is designed by ken yeang... a famous malaysian architect...
singapore by itself has nothing impressive to put herself on the world map...
by investing a little more to get ourself known to the world seems reasonable to me...
look at esplanade...
though it kinda blew it's budget... but now it's rather well known in the world...
just like sydney have her opera house...
we have our "durian..."
for those who dunno... our esplanade had been appearing in many architecture magazines... praising it's architecture...
maybe we should take a step back and look at the bigger picture...
have u notice how our museum, esplanade and library are situated around the vicinity...?
this is because these areas are zoned for arts & performances related facilities...
and all these are part of URA master planning to make Singapore a better place...

I would rather they use a small part of the money to subscribe to a whole range of electronic journals so that anyone in the library can access any journal he wants free..

The govt. shouldn't resort to pork barrel politics in times of economic crises because it only diverts attention of the people from the real issues to something that is artifical and pointless after a while. -

In any case, you have stated that many floors were empty when you visited it. Whether or not you had the intention or not, my first impression of that statement only verifies my belief that a 14 storey tall NLB HQ is not necessary.
And it will get less necessary with the rapid advancement of the digital age where more and more information will be stored in online reference books- that can only be accessed by certain people- and also by the public, if there are two portals catering to both groups separately. n tmd most of the stuff are available online only... no books were written yet.. no wonder i got such low grades tmd -
