Kuan joined JTC to boost chances

IT WAS in 1999 - the year Mr S R Nathan was elected president - that Mr Andrew Kuan began to harbour the ambition of running for the highest office.
Two years later, he joined JTC Corporation as its group chief financial officer (CFO) in June 2001, in a calculated move to boost his chances.
He told reporters yesterday at his Tanah Merah apartment: 'I needed the exposure. I wanted to be involved in the machinery of the Government, to understand and to know more people, establish good relationships with people in the civil service, with political leaders as well as the rank and file.'
Mr Kuan has submitted papers to qualify him to run for president. The only people who qualify are those with at least three years' senior management experience in positions like chairman and CEO of big statutory boards like JTC or heads of ministries, or 'any other similar or comparable position of seniority and responsibility'.
Mr Kuan was CFO, not CEO, so it is uncertain if he will qualify. Candidates also need to be a person of integrity and good character as assessed by the Presidential Elections Committee.
Mr Kuan was in JTC for three years and one month. He said he helped it invest its surplus funds which yielded results 'way above what they used to get'. He also implemented a framework to measure JTC's economic productivity.
On rumours that he left JTC on an unhappy note, he said: 'I don't leave any place on a sour basis.'
He declined to give details about his campaign or his platform.
He did say one supporter, a senior officer in a real estate company, has already put up the $37,500 for the poll deposit.
Mr Kuan, who had offered the interview to the press, was eager to respond to a report in The New Paper yesterday which said he was ousted from his position as chairman of the management council of his condominium in May 2001 after members were not happy with his management style.
He said the conflict arose after he made a police report about a forged signature by a council member who later resigned.
He claimed the man's friends in the council were 'not happy' and tabled a resolution to remove him. Mr Kuan said he then resigned.
Yesterday evening, he made his first public appearance since announcing his presidential bid - as the guest of honour of a dog walk in West Coast Park to celebrate National Day organised by a pet boutique.
Some people expressed support, but others who shook his hand were bemused, apparently not knowing who he was -

He has the same surname as the singapore zoo's current chairman - Robert Kwan.
Are they related? They look a bit alike. Plus we don't have many of that surname around. -

As a normal member and "unendorsed", he left the party to seek Presidency and therefore stepped into the firing line.
But I'd still rather see a CFO running the reserves. -
It is not fair that the Kuan guy is open to all the fire.
At least he got guts to defend himself.
As for Mr N, no one dares to open up the account on what have he achieved for the last six years.
what about his past ?
No one have actually open his past jobs as he was NEVER actually elected by the People at all.
So, to be fair to all the Singaporeans, the press should do a cross-study on the Mr N for his capability in continuing living on the blood and sweat of all singaporeans. -

Well simply because Mr Nathan is the government-endorsed candidate.. no way the press will scrutinise his CV without the explicit permission of the Party.
But personally, looking at what the JTC and Hyflux have said about Mr Kuan today, I get the feeling that he is someone who only knows how to talk big to get people to offer him the job and yet really is incapable of performing as a CFO of a big corporation. -

With People like Ah Kwan underperforming and still being employed in JTC for 37 months, you really have to questioned the judgement of the past and existing CEO in keeping him.
How come no one questioned the CEO on this ??
As for the Million Dollars MP, from the policies and the welfare state of the Singapore People for the past years, it is pretty obvious that there are some who are in the same league as Ah Kuan.

Actually the JTC management had already given several warnings to Kuan and asked him to resign several times, just that he managed to drag on till his 3 years was up and until they gave him an ultimatum. I feel that he really should have come clean with this and not tell the press (was in the Chinese evening papers xinmin yesterday) that he 'resigned from JTC because he wanted to participate in the Presidential Elections'. I think it shows a lot about a person's integrity. -
If Singapore has become a politcally bankrupt country, who is at fault? What we are witnessing is not the fault of one man called Kuan or CSJ. Herein lies a bigger cause of our current problems.

And what's so difficult about being a president. Personally, i think his capability is irrelevent. You can't really do worse than nathan. Rather than letting nathan have a monopoly on the gravy train, i would rather let others have a go. Who knows, he might turn out to be a success! With nathan, that is not going to happen. Personally I take an oppposite view of all things politics reported by our local media.
As far as I know when significant size companies like JTC and Hyflux employ high ranking executives like a CFO, they will do in depth background checks on the candidates. One of the checks is calling the previous employer to find out how was the candidate's performance in his/her previous job. Therefore, if Kuan is really as lousy as what JTC purported him to be, JTC must have LIED to Hyflux! Do you see Hyflux sueing JTC??
Now do you still believe in what our local media says?
