Should Singapore learn more from countries like Taiwan???

The Taiwaneses have the right to choose their leader (president), so why cant us Singaporeans also have the right to choose our own leader (PM), instead of let the government choose for us.
i mean that our next PM is BG Lee, but why cant us have a choice to vote between Tony Tan and BG Lee. Of course, people know Tony Tan is old already so the government dont want him to be PM, but dun you know that not all Singaporeans want BG Lee to be PM because he is son of LKY??? -
I believe that the question here is rather not how much we have to learn, but how similar we are to Taiwan. Perhaps we can draw parallels in terms of our political development. The Kuomintang lifted martial law and Lee Teng Hui ushered in a new era of democratic reforms, finally resulting in the recent passing over of power to the DPP. A gradual release in an authoritarian regime can be observed, and perhaps the government in Singapore is trying to enforce similar changes, put in such a fashion that it is gentle and does not have an overly drastic effect in the state of things at present. The floodgates of change are opening, what with Education reforms, liberalisation of the Telecoms Market, the inevitable liberalisation of the arts scene and media, and the changing political climate. Even the erection of the Speakers Corner, which some may regard as a pointless pursuit, but which i feel is nevertheless a truly symbolic gesture as to the opening up of Singapore. Perhaps we will witness a paradigm shift in the political climate of Singapore, like what Taiwan has experienced.

I have faith in the government. This government, is the one who brought us out of post-war destitution. It should be highly credited for its efficiency.
Having our own elections might not be bad, but most Singaporeans are not exactly highly educated or familiarised with politics. They might be disillusioned by certain negative ideas. They might end up supporting the wrong person. Some past examples may be seen in how mostly it was the peasants who supported the commmunists in Russia.
