On another note, how is australia gg to ensure that these immigrants aren't going to be subjected to racial abuse? My fren had eggs thrown at him! -
i was there 10 years ago...
i never had problems in the 3 years i lived there...
oh well.. i don't have those skills anymore
whatever i've learnt (apart from where to find the grog), i've forgotten -
what about people in the creative industries? they dont want advertising peeps?

Heard from BBC that both UK and Australia facing a skills shortage problem. Too many of their citizens opt for courses like media and psychology in University...they now lack doctors, nurses, engineers, builders, technical staff and financial experts.

i was in melbourne in Nov, and i heard that in the news.. the people were arguing over their talk radio...
seems that a tradesman, i.e. a plumber, a mason or whatever, will earn more than an accountant because of the shortage.. and because of the shortage, the law of demand and supply is on their side

It makes u think twice of being a plumber instead of a doctor. My ex gf guardian was a plumber..he is quite illiterate..cant really read, write or do account books..but my, was he loaded.

The damndest thing is that they're now looking for doctors. A few years back, the Immigration Department was telling everyone that if you're a doctor or lawyer, don't even bother applying because there was an excess.
As for the tradesmen, they get a lot of protection from not only the unions, their trades are covered by law as well. For example, unless you're qualified, it's technically illegal to shut off the water mains to your house. Hell, for all they abuse they put up with as apprentices, I suppose I'd be motivated to cash in too. -
Ever since the Dr Death scandal involving Jayed Patel in Bundaberg, the urgent need for doctors has been thrown into the limelight. I just hope that this urgent need doesn't compromise the selection and recruitment process or else we'll have another scandal again. That's what happens when you bulk-bill everyone and leave no incentive for the best in the practice to stay. I always insist on taking up private medical insurance.

Really... take a look at the targeted countries for this 20,000 skilled workers...
Singapore is not inside!!!
Take a closer look, these countries have workers that will probably get by with lower salaries.

Currently, mining and construction sectors are the most desperate in seeking skilled workers.

SIngaporeans don't need to demand sky-high salaries- sometimes workers also need to like the job, the working environment and the people who will be working with them- and even the boss. As i type this, BBC news is highlighting australia's new drive for brit immigrants. They had one australian barmaid say words to the effect of, "I don't know why you are going to australia, but i hope its not for the money. you're not gg to get much"
Personally, I think she hasn't been in britain long enough to hate the weather... -
