How vulnerable is Singapore's financial district in view of

In view of the latest development in the World Trade Centre in New York, is Singapore taking any pre-emptive measures to ensure that such disaster will not happen to the financial district in Shenton Way. What a terrorist need to bring down the Singapore financial district is just hijacking a Boeing 747 and fly stright into it to demolish it! Singapore has taken more than a decade to build it but it just takes a couple of hours for an outlaw to demolish it!Is Singapore taking any chances?

Thing is, what can we do? Plane doesn't take off from Singapore, if other country's customs is lax, we cannot do anything about it. Thankfully, Singapore is not THAT badlly hated.... yet.

I feel that All aircraft should have knockout gas on board. The cockpit should remain locked and sealed, and in case of Hijack, such gases will be released, rendering everybody unconscious. Pilots should then land the plane. =D

Singapore is a small island and may be it is much easy to manage compare to one big nation like America or China. If you listen to how a US Senator bombarded its own security complacency which led to such tragedy, you may rethink or like to re-examine our own security system. Precaution is always better than cure!

Yes, Singapore may not have much enemy at the moment and no matter how, no matter what, Singapore should tread a cautious route to remain humble and not to offend anybody, especially those concerning religion or those sensitive issues of any of our neighbouring countries. We can uphold our principle and yet remain friendly to any citizen of the world. Singapore may be well off but should remain humble and pragmatic.

It may be practical to set up a radar detection system along the southern corridor(around Marina Zone) to detect some low flying commercial jets and it should always be on high alert on any commercial airline hijacking around the world and especially those from the neighbouring countries!As the commercial districts along Shenton Way area are more vulnerable from the south and south-east which are facing the open South China Sea. A terrorist jet approaching from the northern corridor is hampered most probably by the forest of HDB flats across most part of Singapore.

What if malaysia sends a few commandos and hijack SIA planes and use its own MAS planes to do a pre war preemptive strike against singapore.... hitting all the major infrastructures like power, camps, Command center and telco centers...

my belief is that... the best prevention against terrorism..... is to terrorise the terrorist..

nobody dies for nothing... including those terrorist who crash themselves into the US WTC.... they may have done it out of love of their people or their religion... whichever it may be.... these should be targeted as a reprisal....

in short.... we must teach the terrorist that .... for every innocents lives lost.. the terrorist state... or the state who supported the terrorist in any kind or form will be made to pay back in thoudsands of folds in similar causualty..... in time... in the case of USA vs muslim fundamentalist... americans will probably suffer more attacks... but the muslim fundamentalist will be decimated..... dead people have no cause.... to terrorise anyone.

lastly.... though the muslim fundamentalist may claim to be fearless of death.... but dead muslims..... dont bother anyone.... hahahaaaaaaa

Lets face it.... in view of the way islam work..... its idealistic to think that they would risk going to hell by killing their brothers instead of the infidels(unbelievers) since in their mind.... country dont exist forever.... but ALLAH is forever.

It's up to the political bigwigs to decide. Personally, I have faith that the muslims will aid us, if we gets entangled with Malaysia or Indonesia. However, nations like Saudi Arabia has extremely strong ties with the local muslim population. Therefore, I will trust them to a certain extent.

As a Singaporean, I am inclined to have faith in all races and creeds.However, even ministers have reservations abt the loyalty of the local Malay Muslims due to one incident. I remember reading abt an Israeli minister visiting Singapore, creating an upstir among the local Muslims. This is a minor incident, compared to a full-blown jihad. Therefore, I also have doubts that they will support us in such an incident. Please correct me if I am wrong.

NEARLY 13 years ago, then Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew triggered a debate about Malay loyalty with televised comments he made before a university audience (December 1986). Lee stated that the government had taken two opinion polls prior to and following the visit of Israeli President Chiam Herzog (November 1986) to the republic.

The poll found that the number of Malay respondents who were not against the visit fell sharply from one poll to the next, while the proportion of non-Malays who did not oppose the visit rose marginally.

Lee interpreted this to mean that "in certain circumstances, the Malay Singaporeans react with the emphasis on Malay/Muslim rather than Singaporean.

An article in the Far Eastern Economic Review Asia 1998 Yearbook (pg 222f) says, "To Lee this came down to a question of loyalty : "Are we sure that in a moment of crisis, when the heat is on, we are all together heart to heart? I hope so. But we ought to have a fallback position and quickly fill up all the missing hearts if some go missing."

The same article says, "In February 1987, Lee's son commented further on the status of the Malays in an open forum on why Malays do not hold sensitive positions in the armed forces. Explaining that there are no Malay fighter pilots, for example, because their religion might conflict with their duty to Singapore, he provoked a backlash of criticism from the Muslim community in addition to Singapore's Muslim neighbours."

The article goes on to say, "these statements represented some of the most frank public commentaries ever made by Singapore's political leaders on the role of the Malays, which continues to stir emotions among the Malay community."

As recently as September 18, Mr Lee, speaking at a Singapore 21 forum said, the reality is that while Singapore has made progress in integrating the different races, certain emotional bonds are instinctive and cannot be removed overnight. (Straits Times September 19, 1999)

Asked by a polytechnic student if Singapore could overcome this and become a nation, Mr Lee said: "Yes, I think so, over a long period of time and selectively. We must not make an error.

"If, for instance, you put in a Malay officer who's very religious and who has family ties in Malaysia in charge of a machine gun unit, that's a very tricky business.

"We've got to know his background. I'm saying these things because they are real, and if I didn't think that, and I think even if today the Prime Minister doesn't think carefully about this, we could have a tragedy."

"So, these are problems which, as poly students, you're colour-blind to, but when you face life in reality, it's a different proposition."

Reports in the Singapore media this year refuting Indonesian Presidents Habibie's remarks in February that Singapore was racist because Malays could not become military officers only stated that there are Malay officers in the armed forces.

The reports made no reference to the documented remarks (above) of the two Lees regarding Malay loyalty.

The reports also did not state:

1. if Malays hold sensitive positions in the armed forces;
2. if any Malay officers in the Singapore air force are fighter pilots; and
3. if the Lees have changed their expressed position regarding loyalty of the Malays.
While meritocracy is still maintained in the island and the Singapore armed forces appoints and promotes Malays, there is no evidence that Malay Singaporeans hold sensitive positions in the Singapore armed forces. http://www.singapore-window.org/sw99/90915loy.htm

I do not get that point. Just because we are opposed to Israel's occupation of Palestines does not mean that we would not defend our country.

Becuz I am a citizen of the world and I would like to contribute my opinions on what would make the world better and more just.

I think you made one very big assumption: That we support whoever is Islamic. That's not true. We support those who are being wronged. In this case, the ones we're supporting happened to be Islamic. And do not assume that even though we support Palestin, we support everything they do. Many people support US but do not agree on US policy. And if your read my previous posts, I do support a US attack.

I think the problem herein lies in the fact that some pple fail to differentiate the Islamic extremists and normal Muslims. We do not condone the violent acts that they have done and do not justify it in any way. People tend to forget that there are quite a number of Muslims in the WTC since Islam is the fastest growing religion in the US. We grieve for the live losts whether Muslim or not as we place the same value on each live no matter what their social status is. I also pity the terrorists who had lost their lives because they will not go to heaven as they are led to believe but will rott in hell. Muslims may not be afraid of dying but they are afraid of going to hell.

I also like to point out that the attack is not an act of jihad. The word has been misused by the public and the terrorists in their bid to recruit more pple. There are many aspects to Jihad and one of them is war in Allah's cause. Since Islam specifically condemn this terrorist act..this is not a jihad as it is not in Allah's cause. To prove that Islam does not condone these acts, heres a quote from the Qu'ran:

Who so ever kills a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he has killed all mankind, and who so ever saves the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind," (Al-Ma'dah:32).

To further reinforce this, several Arab states has pledged support to US and Pakistan will assist US.

And I think that it'd be better for tripwire
to lower his tone a bit to facilitate a better and rational discussion without the excess baggage of emotions and prejudices.

...... I pray..... that the day will come.... when people of all faith and race can live in peace, understanding and love.....

BUT.... that day seems even further now with the tragedy of WTC.....

I pray that no more innocent lives be lost or be held hostage by unscrupulous men who claimed to act in the name of GOD, i prayed it will not happened again.... BUT i fear that it will not be so....

Heh.. your argument just showed why US previous foreign policiess has not done well. Action without sufficient preparation or proof. I'm glad now that the President George Bush had mentioned the word 'patience' it one of his addresses. They have to ensure that Osama is indeed the mastermind or not they would suffer a global backlash...not just from the arab states but the rest of the world. People want to see with no doubts lingering that their war against Osama is indeed justified and not just an act of revenge. They would not go into war and waste lives without unnecessary proof. They had blamed the Middle East for the Oklahoma bombing yet it was their own citizen that did it. Though this time it is probably from the middle east, my point is that we should not jump into conclusions and act impulsively on emotions. Investigations is yet to be completed and yet you call out for blood? The Secretary of State General Colin Powell has not issued an attack and yet you have?

Why hasnt the Arab states acted?? Wheres the proof? Why did Pakistan take so long.. You think this is a school project?? Think before you act. Things are not as black and white as you might want it to be. If you read the news carefully, America did demand assistance from Pakistan and Pakistan agreed to the WHOLE list of demands. Check your facts.

Americans defending the good name of god?? Arent some of those Americans Muslims too??

bumiputra policy of malaysia..
unfair but necessary
unless they can do the same thing like what Singapore did..or not the scenario in Indonesia would happen.. where got great inequality in wealth and thus tragic events happen.

The fact remains, Osama is guilty whether he plotted this incident anot. Why do you think the US is pressing for Osama to be handed over?

The point that the US is trying to drive is, "fuck with us and you DIE." The events of September 11, clearly showed someone fucked the US big time. The US policy now is not directed at ONLY muslim terrorism, but ANY form of terrorism that threaten's Global Peace and security.

Regarding the Malay/Muslim issue, I feel the local Muslim community, those who are citizens of Singapore, should attempt to distinguish and stand out apart from the global muslim community. They should attempt to lead the world's muslim community rather than listening and reacting to the gibberish uttered by untrustable external sources. Its okay to be concerned over the Palestinian issue, but it should not tower over the loyalty to YOUR country.

I'm glad now that the President George Bush had mentioned the word 'patience' it one of his addresses. They have to ensure that Osama is indeed the mastermind or not they would suffer a global backlash...not just from the arab states but the rest of the world. People want to see with no doubts lingering that their war against Osama is indeed justified and not just an act of revenge. They would not go into war and waste lives without unnecessary proof. They had blamed the Middle East for the Oklahoma bombing yet it was their own citizen that did it. Though this time it is probably from the middle east, my point is that we should not jump into conclusions and act impulsively on emotions. Investigations is yet to be completed and yet you call out for blood? The Secretary of State General Colin Powell has not issued an attack and yet you have?

Why hasnt the Arab states acted?? Wheres the proof? Why did Pakistan take so long.. You think this is a school project?? Think before you act. Things are not as black and white as you might want it to be. If you read the news carefully, America did demand assistance from Pakistan and Pakistan agreed to the WHOLE list of demands.
